CHAPTER 11 — SARAH'S LAST MESSAGE

The underground archive fell completely silent.

Khloe couldn't move.

The old projector hummed softly as dust drifted through the beam of light.

On the wall, Sarah Bennett looked exhausted. Her dark hair was tied back carelessly, and there were bruises beneath her eyes that no amount of makeup could hide.

She cradled the newborn gently against her chest.

Her voice trembled.

"If you're seeing this..."

"...then Richard couldn't stop what was coming."

Khloe's breath caught.

Richard?

Not "they."

Not "someone."

Richard.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

"I don't know how much time I have."

"They're watching every hallway."

"I've already hidden as much evidence as I can."

"If they find this tape..."

"...they'll destroy everything."

The image flickered.

Then stabilized again.

Sarah kissed the baby's forehead.

"My sweet little Phoenix..."

"If you survive..."

"...please don't spend your life searching for revenge."

"Search for the truth."

Mary covered her mouth.

"Oh, Lord..."

Khloe's eyes never left the screen.

Sarah continued.

"You'll grow up believing another family raised you."

"You'll think it happened by chance."

"It didn't."

"Every document..."

"Every school..."

"Every address..."

"Every move..."

"They've planned your life from the beginning."

Khloe whispered,

"No..."

Upstairs in the central laboratory...

Marcus watched the same recording on the giant monitor.

His heartbeat pounded.

Richard stood motionless.

His face impossible to read.

Adrian slowly lowered himself into a chair.

He looked like a man carrying thirty-three years of regret.

Jonathan broke the silence.

"She said 'they.'"

Marcus nodded.

"There was more than one person involved."

Richard finally spoke.

"Yes."

Marcus turned sharply.

"Then tell me who."

Richard looked toward the screen.

"There were five."

Everyone froze.

Marcus frowned.

"Five?"

Richard nodded.

"We founded Project Phoenix together."

He slowly named them.

"Sarah Bennett."

"Adrian Bennett."

"Myself."

"Daniel Mercer."

Then he stopped.

Marcus waited.

"And the fifth?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"I never learned his real name."

Jonathan stared.

"What do you mean?"

"He represented people who financed the project."

"He never signed anything."

"Never allowed photographs."

"He only used one title."

Marcus stepped closer.

"What title?"

Richard answered quietly.

"Director."

The old videotape continued.

Sarah looked weaker now.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"If Marcus is alive..."

"...tell him I loved him."

Marcus clenched his fists.

Sarah smiled sadly.

"He'll never remember my face."

"But maybe..."

"...he'll remember my voice."

Marcus looked away.

He had no memories of her.

Not one.

Only the woman he believed had been his mother.

Everything else had been erased.

Sarah suddenly became serious.

"Richard isn't your enemy."

Marcus looked up.

Richard's eyes widened.

Even he seemed surprised.

Sarah continued.

"He made terrible choices."

"But he isn't the one who betrayed us."

The recording crackled.

A loud bang echoed somewhere off camera.

Sarah flinched.

"They're here."

She hurried toward the camera.

"If Daniel is still alive..."

"...don't trust him."

The screen filled with static.

Then one final sentence appeared in white letters.

THE CHILDREN MUST NEVER BE TOGETHER.

The tape ended.

Silence.

No one spoke for nearly a full minute.

Marcus finally turned toward Richard.

"The children?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"She wasn't talking only about you."

Marcus's stomach tightened.

"You mean Ethan."

Richard looked at him.

"And Khloe."

Deep inside the archive...

Khloe replayed Sarah's final words.

"The children must never be together."

She looked at Mary.

"What does that mean?"

Mary slowly shook her head.

"I don't know."

"But I have a feeling..."

"...it wasn't about family."

Khloe looked back at the folder.

One page remained unread.

She unfolded it carefully.

It was a handwritten note.

Not typed.

Not official.

Simply folded into the file.

The handwriting was unmistakably Sarah's.

If Marcus ever falls in love with you...

Don't tell him who you are.

If he discovers the truth too early...

They will activate Protocol Black.

Khloe's hands shook.

"Who's... me?"

She turned the page over.

Nothing.

Only Sarah's signature.

At that exact moment...

A hidden door at the rear of the archive slowly opened.

A man stepped inside.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a black tailored suit.

He wasn't armed.

He smiled warmly.

"Khloe."

She immediately backed away.

"Who are you?"

The stranger looked almost disappointed.

"You don't recognize me."

Mary moved protectively in front of Khloe.

"Stay back."

The man ignored her.

Instead...

He looked directly at Khloe.

"I attended your eighth birthday."

"I brought you the music box."

Khloe froze.

Her face lost all color.

She remembered.

A kind older man.

A family friend.

Her parents had introduced him as...

"Uncle Daniel."

Upstairs...

Every monitor suddenly switched on again.

The same man's face appeared live across the facility.

Richard stared at the screen.

His expression hardened.

"Daniel Mercer."

Daniel smiled.

"It's been a long time."

Adrian whispered,

"I watched you die."

Daniel laughed.

"So did everyone else."

Marcus stepped toward the monitor.

"Where's my wife?"

Daniel smiled at Marcus.

"Safe."

"For now."

Richard's voice became cold.

"What do you want?"

Daniel answered immediately.

"The same thing I wanted thirty-three years ago."

Marcus frowned.

"And what's that?"

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"Project Phoenix."

Jonathan interrupted.

"Phoenix ended decades ago."

Daniel laughed again.

"No."

"It only changed names."

The laboratory lights dimmed.

Computer screens across the facility began displaying classified files automatically.

Project Phoenix.

Project Genesis.

Project Horizon.

Project Legacy.

Thousands of files.

Different names.

Different decades.

Same symbol.

A small golden phoenix.

Marcus stared in disbelief.

"It never stopped."

Daniel nodded.

"Congratulations."

"You're finally asking the right questions."

Back inside the archive...

Daniel slowly approached Khloe.

"I've spent your entire life protecting you."

Khloe stared at him.

"My parents trusted you."

"They shouldn't have."

Daniel sighed.

"I agree."

Mary whispered,

"Don't listen to him."

Daniel smiled.

"I don't expect you to believe me."

He slowly reached into his jacket.

Mary tensed.

Instead of a weapon...

He removed an old photograph.

He handed it to Khloe.

It showed Sarah Bennett smiling.

Beside her stood a young woman Khloe recognized instantly.

Her mother.

Or...

The woman she believed was her mother.

The back of the photograph read:

THE SISTERS — SPRING 1992

Khloe's breathing stopped.

"Sisters?"

Daniel nodded gently.

"Yes."

"Sarah Bennett..."

"...was your aunt."

Khloe stared at him in shock.

Daniel delivered the revelation calmly.

"Your mother wasn't Sarah."

"But Sarah gave her life..."

"...to save yours."

Before Khloe could ask another question...

The lights throughout the archive suddenly went out.

Complete darkness swallowed the room.

Then...

A single gunshot echoed through the underground corridor.

Mary screamed.

Someone collapsed.

And in the darkness...

A child's voice whispered,

"Mom..."

Khloe froze.

Her unborn baby had not yet been born.

May you like

So whose child...

Had just called for her?
