CHAPTER 14 — THE SISTER WHO VANISHED

The hidden tunnel beneath St. Vincent Medical Center stretched endlessly into darkness.
The walls were ancient compared to the high-tech laboratory they had just escaped.
No glass.
No computers.
No security systems.
Only cold concrete and fading emergency lights.
It felt less like a passageway...
And more like a forgotten grave.
Marcus walked silently at the front of the group.
In his hand was the old photograph.
Three children.
Three faces.
Three lives that had never existed in his memories.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
"Emma."
The name felt strange.
Impossible.
Yet somehow...
Familiar.
Jonathan walked beside him.
"You really had another sibling?"
Marcus shook his head.
"I don't know."
"That's the problem."
His voice became colder.
"My entire life has been built on things I was told."
"And apparently almost everything was a lie."
Behind them, Richard remained quiet.
Too quiet.
Marcus noticed.
"You knew."
Richard didn't answer.
Marcus stopped walking.
Everyone froze.
"I said..."
"You knew."
Richard slowly turned.
The old billionaire looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just an old man carrying decades of secrets.
"Yes."
Marcus stared at him.
"You knew I had a sister."
"Yes."
"You let me believe I was alone."
Richard lowered his eyes.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"That's the same excuse everyone uses."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Marcus..."
"No."
Marcus looked at him.
"You too."
Adrian stopped.
"You knew."
The silence confirmed it.
Marcus shook his head slowly.
"My entire life..."
"My family."
"My childhood."
"My identity."
"Everyone decided what I was allowed to know."
Richard finally spoke.
"Because the truth was dangerous."
Marcus pointed toward the photograph.
"My sister was dangerous?"
"No."
Richard's voice softened.
"Your existence together was dangerous."
The tunnel lights flickered.
Everyone looked upward.
A distant alarm echoed.
Jonathan checked his device.
"We have a problem."
Marcus turned.
"What?"
"The underground facility is being erased."
Adrian frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Jonathan showed the screen.
Files.
Archives.
Security records.
Everything related to Project Phoenix...
Was being deleted.
One by one.
Someone was destroying thirty years of evidence.
Marcus looked at Richard.
"Who has access?"
Richard's face changed.
Only one person came to mind.
"Ethan."
At the same moment...
Back inside the underground facility...
Ethan Thorne stood alone in the central laboratory.
The fire suppression system sprayed mist into the air.
Screens around him displayed hundreds of files.
He pressed one button.
DELETE ALL PROJECT PHOENIX RECORDS?
He confirmed.
The progress bar moved.
12%.
24%.
39%.
A voice behind him spoke.
"You always were dramatic."
Ethan turned.
Daniel Mercer stood in the doorway.
Neither man looked surprised.
"You survived."
Daniel smiled.
"So did you."
Ethan looked at him coldly.
"I thought Richard buried you."
Daniel laughed.
"Richard tried."
"And you?"
"I let him believe he succeeded."
The two men stared at each other.
Decades of hatred filled the room.
"You caused all of this," Ethan said.
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"I revealed all of this."
"There's a difference."
"You destroyed our family."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Our family destroyed itself."
Ethan looked back at the screens.
"You think Marcus deserves the truth?"
Daniel answered immediately.
"Yes."
"Even if it destroys him?"
"Especially then."
Meanwhile...
The tunnel finally opened into an abandoned underground parking area.
A black SUV waited.
Mary looked surprised.
"Someone knew we'd come here."
Richard answered quietly.
"I did."
Marcus turned.
"You arranged this escape?"
Richard nodded.
"Years ago."
"In case everything went wrong."
Marcus stared.
"Everything did go wrong."
Richard looked away.
"Not everything."
A sound interrupted them.
Footsteps.
Someone was approaching.
Everyone raised their weapons.
A woman stepped from the shadows.
No weapon.
No fear.
She looked directly at Marcus.
And smiled.
"Hello, brother."
Marcus froze.
The woman looked nothing like he expected.
Dark hair.
Confident eyes.
A familiar expression.
The same blue eyes.
The same facial features.
A reflection of himself.
Older.
But unmistakably family.
Emma.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Marcus whispered,
"You're real."
Emma smiled sadly.
"That's usually what people say when they've been told someone is dead."
Marcus couldn't move.
"Why?"
"Why did everyone hide you?"
"Why did everyone hide me?"
Emma looked toward Richard.
"Because he was afraid."
Richard said nothing.
Emma continued.
"And because someone wanted us separated."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Who?"
Emma looked at him.
"The people behind Project Phoenix."
"Not Richard."
"Not Daniel."
"Someone above them."
Jonathan frowned.
"Someone above Richard Thorne?"
Emma nodded.
"Yes."
She pulled a small device from her jacket.
Placed it on the hood of the SUV.
The screen activated.
A list appeared.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Executives.
Government officials.
Scientists.
Every person involved in Project Phoenix.
Marcus stared.
"This is impossible."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"It's the truth."
Then one name appeared.
At the very top.
The highest clearance level.
DIRECTOR: UNKNOWN
Marcus looked at Richard.
"Who is this?"
Richard didn't answer.
Emma did.
"Your grandfather."
Everyone froze.
Marcus stared.
"My grandfather died before I was born."
Emma shook her head.
"That's what they wanted you to believe."
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
An elderly man standing beside young Richard.
Marcus recognized the family resemblance instantly.
The man looked exactly like Richard.
But older.
The caption read:
ALEXANDER THORNE
Founder of Thorne Legacy.
The first architect of Project Phoenix.
Adrian whispered,
"He wasn't supposed to be alive."
Emma looked at him.
"Neither was I."
Marcus looked at Emma.
"Why come back now?"
Her expression became serious.
"Because the attack on Khloe wasn't the beginning."
"It was the final warning."
Marcus frowned.
"Final warning for what?"
Emma looked toward the city above them.
"For the day when the Phoenix children would finally reunite."
Before Marcus could respond...
Every phone in the group received the same message.
Unknown sender.
One sentence.
THE FAMILY IS COMPLETE. NOW THE PURGE BEGINS.
Then another message appeared.
A countdown.
72 HOURS REMAINING
Jonathan looked up.
"What happens in seventy-two hours?"
Emma's face turned pale.
"The Phoenix Protocol."
Marcus stared.
"What is that?"
Emma answered quietly.
"The system designed to erase every person who knows the truth."
Mary whispered,
"Everyone?"
Emma nodded.
"Everyone."
Far away...
Inside a private office overlooking the ocean...
A man watched the same countdown.
He was older.
Calm.
Powerful.
The same man from the photograph.
Alexander Thorne.
He smiled.
"After thirty years..."
"The children finally found each other."
He looked at the screen displaying Marcus, Khloe, Ethan, and Emma.
Then he pressed a button.
"Begin Phase Three."
A voice responded.
"Confirmed."
The man leaned back.
May you like
"And this time..."
"No one survives the Phoenix."
