CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN

Marcus Thorne had built one of the most secure business empires in America.
His companies protected billion-dollar patents.
Government contracts.
Artificial intelligence systems.
Private investment portfolios worth more than the GDP of some small countries.
His cybersecurity division had stopped international hackers.
His security team included former Secret Service agents, retired FBI analysts, and military intelligence experts.
Yet someone had just entered a private hospital under his identity.
Threatened his pregnant wife.
Watched his beach house in real time.
And vanished without leaving a single trace.
For the first time in years...
Marcus felt outmatched.
He turned toward Jonathan Reeves.
"I want every member of my executive security team here within thirty minutes."
Jonathan nodded.
"They're already on their way."
"No."
Marcus's voice hardened.
"Not all of them."
"I want everyone."
Jonathan hesitated.
"There are sixty-three agents."
"I know."
Marcus looked toward the hospital window overlooking the city.
"If this goes as high as I think it does..."
"...I can't trust that all sixty-three are still working for me."
Silence settled over the room.
Even Adrian Bennett looked surprised.
"You think someone inside your own security division has been compromised?"
Marcus answered without turning around.
"I think someone has been compromised for years."
Khloe watched him carefully.
She had seen Marcus angry.
She had seen him disappointed.
She had even seen him frightened after learning she was pregnant because he feared failing as a father.
But this...
This version of Marcus was different.
Cold.
Focused.
Dangerously calm.
The businessman who had defeated ruthless competitors across three continents had returned.
"Jonathan."
"Yes?"
"How many people knew Khloe would be in this hospital tonight?"
Jonathan answered immediately.
"You."
"Mrs. Thorne."
"Myself."
"Dr. Bennett."
"The attending physicians."
"The event coordinator."
Marcus interrupted.
"And Isabella."
Jonathan nodded.
"She learned after following your vehicle from the gala."
Marcus crossed another name off in his mind.
Too easy.
Too obvious.
Someone else had informed her.
Meanwhile...
Three miles away...
A black luxury sedan remained parked on a quiet hill overlooking downtown.
Inside, a man watched the hospital through military-grade binoculars.
His silver hair reflected the dashboard lights.
His expensive suit looked perfectly tailored despite the late hour.
He lowered the binoculars.
"They're moving faster than expected."
The woman sitting beside him smiled.
"Marcus always was intelligent."
The man nodded.
"That's why he'll eventually understand."
She turned toward him.
"And if he doesn't?"
The old man stared at the glowing skyline.
"Then he'll lose everything."
The woman smiled again.
Including Isabella.
Back inside the hospital...
Isabella Rossi sat alone inside the secured conference room.
No lawyer.
No phone.
No visitors.
Hours earlier she had believed she controlled every piece on the board.
Now she felt like the one being sacrificed.
The door opened.
A security officer entered carrying bottled water.
"Your attorney is on the way."
Isabella looked up.
"Finally."
The officer placed the bottle on the table.
As he turned to leave, he quietly whispered without looking back,
"They've abandoned you."
The door closed.
Isabella frowned.
What?
She grabbed the water bottle.
Attached beneath it with clear tape was a folded piece of paper.
No signature.
Only one sentence.
IF YOU TALK, YOU DIE FIRST.
The color drained from her face.
Her hands began shaking uncontrollably.
Who had delivered it?
How?
She looked toward the security camera inside the room.
The officer had never touched the bottle.
Not on camera.
The note had already been there.
Someone inside the hospital was helping them.
On the twenty-first floor...
Khloe finally slept.
Exhaustion had overcome fear.
Marcus remained beside her bed.
Watching every heartbeat on the monitor.
Every breath.
Every tiny movement from the child she carried.
Adrian quietly entered.
"You should get some rest."
Marcus shook his head.
"I'm staying."
"You've been awake almost twenty hours."
"I've had worse."
Adrian pulled up a chair.
For several minutes, neither man spoke.
Finally Adrian broke the silence.
"You really think Richard is involved?"
Marcus looked at his sleeping wife.
"I don't know."
"But I know this."
"My father taught me something when I was twelve."
"What?"
Marcus smiled bitterly.
"He said..."
"'Never fear your enemies.'"
"'Fear the people who smile while standing beside you.'"
Adrian's expression darkened.
"Richard actually said that?"
Marcus nodded.
"I thought he meant business."
"Maybe he wasn't talking about business."
Across town...
The Thorne Family Estate stood in perfect silence.
The mansion had belonged to the family for nearly ninety years.
Inside the library, Richard Thorne poured himself a glass of aged Scotch.
He appeared relaxed.
Unbothered.
As though nothing unusual had happened.
The grandfather clock struck midnight.
Richard smiled faintly.
"You can come out now."
A hidden door behind the bookshelves opened.
A man stepped into the room.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Black gloves.
No expression.
Richard handed him a sealed folder.
"The hospital failed."
The man nodded.
"I know."
"What about Isabella?"
Richard shrugged.
"She's expendable."
"And Khloe?"
Richard stared into the fireplace.
"Not anymore."
The man looked surprised.
Richard continued,
"As long as she possesses the envelope..."
"...she's more valuable alive."
The man frowned.
"Marcus will protect her."
"Exactly."
Richard smiled.
"And that is how we'll control him."
Back at the hospital...
Jonathan entered Marcus's temporary command room carrying several printed files.
"We've finished reviewing Isabella Rossi's financial records."
Marcus looked up.
"Anything?"
Jonathan placed photographs across the table.
"There are twenty-seven unexplained wire transfers over the last eighteen months."
Marcus examined them.
Amounts ranging from fifty thousand dollars...
...to two million.
Every payment originated from shell companies.
Every shell company ultimately traced back to the same private investment fund.
Marcus froze.
"No..."
Jonathan looked confused.
"You recognize it?"
Marcus slowly turned one page around.
Printed in tiny letters at the bottom was the fund's registration number.
He knew it immediately.
He had memorized it years ago.
Because it belonged to...
The Thorne Legacy Trust.
The oldest family trust in their empire.
Created by Richard Thorne himself.
Jonathan stared.
"What is it?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"Those payments didn't come from strangers."
"They came from my family."
Before Jonathan could respond, Marcus's encrypted phone vibrated.
Only three people possessed that number.
Jonathan.
Adrian.
And Richard.
The caller ID displayed one name.
FATHER.
Marcus answered without speaking.
For several seconds...
There was only silence.
Then Richard's calm voice filled the line.
"I heard Khloe survived."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Was that supposed to disappoint you?"
A soft chuckle echoed through the speaker.
"You've always jumped to conclusions."
Marcus ignored the remark.
"Did you finance Isabella?"
Another pause.
Then Richard replied,
"You're asking the wrong question."
Marcus's heart pounded.
"What should I be asking?"
Richard's voice became strangely gentle.
"You should be asking why your wife stole the envelope..."
"...before wondering who wanted it."
The call ended.
Marcus stared at the dark screen.
His father hadn't denied anything.
Not once.
He had only redirected the conversation.
Which meant one thing.
Richard already knew about the envelope.
And perhaps...
He had known exactly where it was all along.
Marcus slowly turned toward the hospital room where Khloe slept peacefully.
He loved his wife.
He would protect her with his life.
But one question now refused to leave his mind.
What had Khloe seen inside that envelope... that made her risk everything to steal it?
Far across the city, in an undisclosed location, a computer monitor flickered to life.
A hooded figure watched live security feeds from the hospital.
One screen showed Marcus.
Another showed Khloe.
Another showed Isabella.
The figure typed a single command.
PHASE TWO: INITIATED.
A progress bar appeared.
3%... 7%... 12%...
Then the figure whispered into the darkness,
"They still think this is about the Thorne family."
A distorted voice answered through the speakers.
"It never was."
The monitor switched to an old photograph.
Taken twenty-eight years earlier.
Three young adults stood smiling together.
One of them was Richard Thorne.
One was Adrian Bennett.
The third person's face had been burned away.
Someone had deliberately destroyed it.
May you like
Across the bottom of the photograph, written in faded black ink, were five chilling words:
THE DEBT MUST BE PAID.
