CHAPTER 16 — THE WOMAN WHO NEVER DIED

The sound of the heartbeat filled the underground chamber.

Slow.

Steady.

Impossible.

Everyone stared at the server screen.

WELCOME BACK, SARAH.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Sarah Bennett was alive.

Marcus felt like the entire world had shifted beneath him.

His mother.

The woman he had mourned his entire life.

The woman whose death had shaped every decision he ever made.

Was alive.

He looked at Richard.

The old man couldn't meet his eyes.

"Tell me."

Richard remained silent.

Marcus's voice became louder.

"Tell me she isn't alive."

Still nothing.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Because if you knew..."

"If you knew she survived..."

"...and you let me believe she was dead..."

His voice broke.

"Then I will never forgive you."

A mechanical lock clicked.

Behind the server room, another door slowly opened.

Everyone raised their weapons.

The hallway beyond was dark.

Cold air flowed into the room.

Then...

A figure appeared.

An elderly woman.

Gray hair.

Weak posture.

But unmistakable eyes.

Blue eyes.

The same eyes Marcus had seen in the mirror his entire life.

She stopped at the entrance.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Marcus."

His entire body froze.

One word.

One voice.

A voice he had never remembered...

Yet somehow recognized.

"Mom?"

No one spoke.

The woman took a small step forward.

"I'm sorry."

Marcus couldn't move.

All the anger.

All the pain.

All the years of believing he had been abandoned...

Collapsed into one moment.

"You were alive."

Sarah nodded.

"Yes."

"And you left me."

Her face broke.

"No."

"I lost you."

Richard closed his eyes.

The weight of the secret finally visible.

Marcus turned toward him.

"You knew."

Richard whispered,

"Yes."

Marcus laughed.

A painful laugh.

"Of course you knew."

"Everyone knew."

"Everyone except me."

Sarah looked at her son.

"I wanted to come back."

Marcus looked at her.

"Then why didn't you?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because every person who tried to expose Phoenix disappeared."

"I knew if I returned..."

"They would use you against me."

Emma stepped closer.

"She protected us."

Marcus looked at his sister.

"By abandoning us?"

Emma shook her head.

"No."

"By surviving."

Khloe watched quietly.

For the first time, she understood.

This wasn't just a family secret.

It was a war.

A war that had lasted decades.

Alexander's voice suddenly returned through the speakers.

"Beautiful."

Everyone looked upward.

The old man's voice was calm.

Almost amused.

"The family reunion I never got to enjoy."

Sarah looked toward the cameras.

"Alexander."

"You should have stayed dead."

A low laugh echoed.

"And you should have stayed hidden."

Marcus stepped toward the speaker.

"You destroyed our lives."

Alexander answered calmly.

"No."

"I created something greater than your lives."

"You were all part of something important."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"We were children."

"Children are the purest form of potential."

"Before society corrupts them."

Jonathan whispered,

"This man is insane."

Richard answered quietly,

"No."

"He is worse."

"He believes he is right."

Alexander continued.

"The Phoenix children were never meant to be a family."

"They were meant to be proof."

Emma looked disgusted.

"Proof of what?"

"That humanity can be improved."

Alexander answered.

"That memories can be transferred."

"That intelligence can be inherited."

"That loyalty can be engineered."

Khloe stepped forward.

"And the attacks?"

Alexander became silent.

Then:

"A necessary correction."

Marcus's face darkened.

"You tried to kill my wife."

"No."

"I tested her."

Khloe stared.

"You call that a test?"

Alexander replied:

"If she survived..."

"She was worthy."

Marcus's hands tightened into fists.

"You don't get to decide who is worthy."

Alexander laughed softly.

"That's where you are wrong."

"You are all standing here because I decided you would."

Suddenly...

The server screen changed.

A new file appeared.

PROJECT PHOENIX — FINAL SUBJECT

Everyone looked confused.

Richard stepped closer.

"No..."

Sarah's face changed.

"What?"

Richard stared at the screen.

"The final subject wasn't Marcus."

"Or Emma."

"Or Elizabeth."

The file opened.

A photograph appeared.

A newborn baby.

Below it:

SUBJECT P-00

CREATION DATE: UNKNOWN

STATUS: ACTIVE

Jonathan looked at Sarah.

"Who is that?"

Sarah's expression turned to horror.

"I thought it was destroyed."

Marcus looked at her.

"What was destroyed?"

Sarah whispered:

"The first Phoenix child."

The image became clearer.

Everyone stared.

Because the baby in the photograph...

Was not a stranger.

It was someone they knew.

Khloe stepped backward.

"No..."

Marcus looked at the screen.

His face lost all color.

Because beneath the photograph was a name.

A name that made no sense.

SUBJECT P-00: ETHAN THORNE

Silence.

Ethan.

The brother who had died.

The brother who had returned.

The brother who had been manipulating events from the shadows.

He wasn't just involved in Phoenix.

He was the beginning.

The chamber doors suddenly locked.

Red lights flashed.

SECURITY LEVEL: OMEGA

Sarah looked around in panic.

"No."

Marcus turned.

"What?"

She whispered:

"Alexander activated the original protocol."

Emma looked at the countdown.

A new timer appeared.

12:00:00

Jonathan frowned.

"Twelve hours?"

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"Twelve minutes."

Everyone froze.

"What happens after twelve minutes?" Khloe asked.

Sarah looked at her children.

Then answered:

"The system will choose the surviving Phoenix subject."

Marcus frowned.

"Choose?"

Sarah nodded.

"And eliminate the rest."

The countdown began.

11:59

11:58

11:57

Above them...

The entire city remained unaware.

Below them...

A family war that had lasted thirty years entered its final stage.

And somewhere in the darkness...

Ethan watched.

Smiling.

Because he knew something nobody else did.

May you like

The final Phoenix subject...

Was not him.
