CHAPTER 12 — THE CHILD IN THE DARK

The gunshot echoed through the underground archive.

Then came silence.

Absolute silence.

The emergency lights failed to activate, leaving the corridor swallowed in darkness.

Khloe couldn't see her own hands.

Only the frantic sound of breathing surrounded her.

Mary's voice trembled somewhere nearby.

"Khloe?"

"I'm here."

"Don't move."

Khloe obeyed instinctively.

The childlike whisper came again.

This time closer.

"Mom..."

Every hair on the back of her neck stood up.

It wasn't coming from behind her.

It was somewhere in front of her.

Deep inside the archive.

Upstairs, the entire underground complex lost power.

Technicians shouted across the laboratory.

Backup generators failed to respond.

Computer screens went black one after another.

Jonathan grabbed a flashlight.

"Emergency systems are down."

Richard frowned.

"Impossible."

"They're isolated."

An engineer looked up from the control panel.

"They weren't shut down..."

"They were disconnected."

"From inside."

Richard's expression darkened.

Someone wasn't attacking the facility.

Someone knew it better than its own creators.

Marcus didn't wait.

"I'm going to Khloe."

Jonathan followed immediately.

"So am I."

Richard stepped into their path.

"The archive isn't safe."

Marcus glared at him.

"My wife is in there."

Richard quietly answered,

"That's exactly why it isn't safe."

The emergency lights finally flickered on.

Only every fifth light worked.

Long shadows stretched across the underground corridors.

The facility suddenly felt abandoned.

Like a ghost town.

Jonathan checked his weapon.

"We'll move fast."

Marcus nodded.

"No one gets separated."

Richard looked strangely conflicted.

Then he reached inside his coat.

Jonathan immediately raised his pistol.

Richard slowly removed...

An old brass key.

He handed it to Marcus.

"You'll need this."

Marcus looked down.

The key was heavy.

Handmade.

Its head was engraved with the same golden phoenix symbol that appeared throughout the underground facility.

"What does it open?"

Richard hesitated.

"A door..."

"...I prayed would remain locked forever."

Meanwhile...

Inside the archive...

Khloe slowly reached into her pocket.

Her fingers found her phone.

No signal.

Only 12% battery.

She switched on the flashlight.

A narrow beam cut through the darkness.

The room looked different.

Cabinets had shifted.

Hidden walls had opened.

The archive was much larger than before.

Mary appeared beside her.

Blood stained the sleeve of her uniform.

Khloe gasped.

"You're hurt."

Mary looked down.

"A graze."

"The bullet barely touched me."

Relief flooded Khloe.

"We have to keep moving."

They cautiously followed the flashlight deeper into the archive.

The crying child echoed again.

Not frightened.

Lonely.

Almost... familiar.

Khloe's chest tightened.

"I know that voice."

Mary looked at her.

"How?"

"I don't know."

"But I do."

The corridor opened into a circular chamber.

Unlike the laboratories, this room looked old.

Very old.

Stone walls.

Iron shelves.

Hundreds of leather-bound journals.

In the center stood a massive wooden cradle.

Empty.

Covered in dust.

Above it hung a bronze plaque.

PHOENIX FOUNDATION

ESTABLISHED 1988

Khloe frowned.

"This project started before Marcus was born."

Mary nodded slowly.

"Which means..."

"It was never about him."

Khloe's flashlight landed on a family portrait hanging crookedly on the wall.

She stepped closer.

Richard.

Sarah.

Adrian.

Daniel.

Another young woman.

And...

Two children.

One was Marcus.

The other...

Was a little girl.

Khloe stared.

The girl looked exactly like the child from her own baby photographs.

Except...

The name beneath the frame wasn't Khloe.

It read:

ELIZABETH PARKER

Khloe whispered,

"No..."

Mary looked at the portrait.

"Elizabeth."

Khloe felt dizzy.

"I've never heard that name."

Mary gently touched the frame.

"Maybe because it was never supposed to survive."

Suddenly—

A slow clap echoed through the chamber.

Both women spun around.

Daniel Mercer stepped from the shadows.

Unarmed.

Calm.

He smiled sadly.

"I wondered how long it would take you."

Khloe backed away.

"Stay where you are."

Daniel nodded.

"I intend to."

He looked toward the portrait.

"Your real name..."

"...was Elizabeth."

Silence.

Khloe shook her head.

"You're lying."

Daniel didn't argue.

Instead, he pointed toward the bronze cradle.

"Look inside."

She hesitated.

Mary nodded carefully.

"Let's see."

Khloe approached.

Inside the cradle lay a faded baby blanket.

Neatly folded.

Embroidered in blue thread were the words:

Elizabeth Anne Parker

She touched the fabric.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

She didn't know why.

It simply...

Felt familiar.

Daniel watched quietly.

"You were only eighteen months old when your identity changed."

Khloe looked up.

"My identity?"

"You were never adopted."

"You were hidden."

Back in the underground corridors...

Marcus, Jonathan, Richard, Adrian, and four security agents hurried toward the archive.

Every intersection looked identical.

Jonathan checked the blueprint.

"It doesn't match."

Richard nodded.

"Someone rebuilt this level."

"When?"

Richard answered,

"While I still owned it."

Marcus looked at him sharply.

"You knew?"

"I approved construction."

Marcus stopped walking.

"You approved secret tunnels beneath a hospital?"

Richard looked ashamed.

"I believed I was protecting my family."

Marcus replied coldly,

"You buried the truth instead."

Without warning—

One of the security agents collapsed.

A tranquilizer dart protruded from his neck.

"AMBUSH!"

Gunfire erupted from both sides of the corridor.

Not bullets.

Darts.

Gas canisters rolled across the floor.

White smoke filled the hallway.

Jonathan shouted,

"Masks!"

Too late.

Two more agents collapsed.

Marcus covered his mouth with his sleeve.

Richard grabbed his arm.

"This way!"

They stumbled through a hidden doorway just before the corridor disappeared behind thick chemical gas.

Jonathan coughed violently.

"What was that?"

Richard answered immediately.

"Non-lethal."

Marcus frowned.

"You know the formula."

Richard looked away.

"I helped create it."

Back in the circular chamber...

Daniel looked directly at Khloe.

"You've spent your entire life asking the wrong question."

Khloe whispered,

"What question?"

"You've wondered..."

"'Why did they choose me?'"

He smiled gently.

"They didn't choose you."

"They've been trying to find you."

Mary stared.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel slowly turned toward the family portrait.

"Elizabeth Parker disappeared thirty years ago."

"The people hunting Project Phoenix believed she died."

He looked back at Khloe.

"They were wrong."

Khloe's voice barely escaped her lips.

"You're saying..."

Daniel nodded.

"You are the last surviving witness."

Khloe frowned.

"I was a baby."

"Exactly."

She looked confused.

"A baby can't witness anything."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Not consciously."

"But memory..."

He tapped the side of his head.

"...is far more complicated than people once believed."

Before Khloe could ask another question—

A hidden speaker crackled to life.

Richard's voice echoed through the chamber.

"Daniel!"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"So..."

"...he finally found us."

The massive stone door behind Khloe slowly began to open.

Marcus's voice thundered through the darkness.

"KHLOE!"

She turned toward the sound.

Relief flooded her face.

"Marcus!"

She started to run—

But Daniel suddenly shouted,

"STOP!"

She froze.

Daniel's expression had completely changed.

For the first time...

He looked terrified.

He pointed toward the floor between them.

"There are pressure sensors."

"If you take one more step..."

"...this entire chamber will collapse."

Marcus emerged through the opening just in time to hear the warning.

He stopped instantly.

Then looked down.

Tiny red laser dots covered the ancient stone floor.

Richard arrived behind him.

The color drained from his face.

He whispered only three words.

"Protocol Black..."

Marcus looked at him.

"What is Protocol Black?"

Richard answered in a broken voice.

"The room..."

"...was designed to bury every secret forever."

And somewhere beneath their feet...

May you like

A hidden countdown quietly began.

09:59... 09:58... 09:57...
