CHAPTER 7 — THE HOUSEKEEPER'S GAMBLE

Mary Collins had spent thirty-one years working in St. Vincent Medical Center.
She had cleaned operating rooms after impossible surgeries.
Comforted frightened children waiting for chemotherapy.
Held the hands of lonely patients who had no family left.
She had never carried a weapon.
Never worn a badge with authority.
Never imagined she would one day stand between armed killers and a pregnant woman.
Yet that was exactly where she stood.
The man in the maintenance uniform leveled the suppressed pistol at her chest.
His smile vanished.
"So," he said quietly, "let's not make this difficult."
Mary tightened both hands around the housekeeping cart.
"I've worked here long enough to know one thing."
The man tilted his head.
"And what's that?"
"The people who tell you not to make things difficult..."
"...are usually the ones causing all the trouble."
One of the other men chuckled.
The leader did not.
"Move away from the cart."
Mary remained still.
"No."
The hallway fell silent.
Hidden beneath folded blankets, Khloe heard every word.
Her heart pounded so violently she feared the men would hear it.
One hand rested over her stomach.
The other gripped the cream-colored envelope hidden inside her coveralls.
Her baby kicked gently.
Almost as if sensing the danger.
Please...
Just stay quiet...
The armed man took one slow step forward.
"You have three seconds."
Mary answered calmly.
"I've had children."
"I know empty threats when I hear them."
The man's expression hardened.
"This isn't a threat."
"I know."
Mary smiled.
"It's cowardice."
Without warning—
She shoved the housekeeping cart forward with every ounce of strength she had.
The heavy steel cart slammed into the gunman's knees.
He crashed backward into the wall.
The pistol discharged.
The suppressed round shattered a fluorescent light above them.
Glass rained across the hallway.
Mary screamed,
"RUN!"
Khloe burst from beneath the blankets.
She didn't think.
She ran.
The attackers reacted instantly.
"There she is!"
One of them raised his weapon.
Another sprinted after her.
Khloe turned the corner just as another shot struck the wall inches from her shoulder.
She couldn't outrun them.
Seven months pregnant.
Bruised ribs.
Barely able to breathe.
Still...
She kept running.
Upstairs...
Jonathan Reeves received the emergency transmission.
"Target exposed!"
He grabbed his radio.
"All teams!"
"Service Corridor Delta!"
"Move!"
Marcus struggled to stand despite blood soaking through the bandage on his shoulder.
Adrian blocked him.
"You're not going anywhere."
Marcus shoved his hand away.
"My wife is."
He staggered toward the hallway.
Meanwhile...
Khloe pushed through a pair of swinging service doors.
She stopped abruptly.
The corridor ahead ended at a freight elevator.
Closed.
She hammered the call button.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
The hospital-wide system failure had disabled it.
"No..."
Footsteps echoed behind her.
Closer.
Closer.
Closer.
She looked around desperately.
Storage room.
Locked.
Laundry room.
Locked.
Supply closet.
Locked.
There was nowhere to go.
The three attackers rounded the corner.
The leader smiled.
"It's over."
Khloe backed against the elevator doors.
"You don't have to do this."
He laughed softly.
"This was decided long before you were born."
Khloe frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"You really don't know?"
The man looked almost disappointed.
"Richard told us you'd never figure it out."
He took another step.
"The envelope."
Khloe shook her head.
"I'll destroy it."
The man smiled.
"Too late."
"It isn't the papers we need."
"It's what you already know."
Khloe felt a chill crawl through her body.
They didn't just want the documents.
They wanted her silence.
Forever.
Suddenly—
A loud metallic crash echoed behind the attackers.
All three spun around.
Mary Collins stood in the hallway holding a bright red fire extinguisher.
Her breathing was heavy.
Her uniform was torn.
Blood trickled from a cut above her eyebrow.
Yet she smiled.
"You boys forgot something."
The leader frowned.
"What?"
Mary pulled the safety pin.
"This."
A blinding white cloud exploded into the hallway.
The pressurized chemical spray filled the corridor instantly.
The attackers coughed violently.
Unable to see.
Unable to breathe.
Mary grabbed Khloe's arm.
"Come on!"
They ran.
On the twenty-first floor...
Jonathan finally reached the security center.
His analysts were working frantically.
One technician pointed at the screen.
"We've identified the hacker's route."
Jonathan leaned closer.
"Where?"
The technician swallowed.
"The intrusion didn't come from outside."
Jonathan frowned.
"What?"
"It originated..."
"...inside the hospital."
Every monitor displayed the same location.
BASEMENT LEVEL B-3
Jonathan's expression darkened.
"There's nothing on B-3."
Another analyst answered quietly,
"There isn't supposed to be."
Marcus overheard the conversation.
"B-3 was sealed years ago."
Jonathan looked at him.
"Exactly."
Hospital records showed the basement had flooded nearly two decades earlier.
Every entrance had supposedly been filled with concrete.
No one had entered since.
Or so everyone believed.
Adrian suddenly froze.
His face lost all color.
Marcus noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
Adrian whispered,
"B-3..."
"I haven't heard that level mentioned in twenty-eight years."
Marcus stared.
"You've been there."
Adrian slowly nodded.
"Once."
"What happened?"
Adrian looked toward the floor.
"Someone died."
Before Marcus could ask another question—
Every phone inside the command room rang simultaneously.
One.
Two.
Three.
Seven phones.
All at once.
Jonathan answered the nearest one.
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Then a distorted electronic voice said,
"Wrong basement."
The line disconnected.
Every phone went dead.
Elsewhere...
Mary and Khloe finally reached an old service staircase.
Mary pushed open the heavy metal door.
"Down."
Khloe hesitated.
"My doctor said I shouldn't—"
Mary interrupted gently.
"If we stay here..."
"...you won't need a doctor anymore."
They descended carefully.
One floor.
Then another.
Then another.
At Level 18, Khloe suddenly stopped.
"Do you hear that?"
Mary listened.
Faintly...
A baby was crying.
Not one floor away.
Not above them.
Below.
Much farther below.
Mary frowned.
"That's impossible."
The hospital's maternity ward was on the seventh floor.
The crying came from underneath them.
Deep underground.
Then the sound stopped.
Both women looked at each other.
Neither said a word.
Back upstairs...
Jonathan finally received new surveillance footage.
One camera on Level 19 had survived the cyberattack.
The image showed the three attackers pursuing Khloe.
Then...
Another person entered the frame.
A tall man wearing a black overcoat.
No weapon.
No mask.
The attackers immediately stopped.
One lowered his head respectfully.
As though greeting a superior.
The man pointed toward another hallway.
Without speaking, all three obeyed.
Jonathan enlarged the image.
The camera briefly captured the man's face before the feed died.
Marcus stared at the frozen frame.
His entire body went rigid.
"No..."
Jonathan looked at him.
"You know him?"
Marcus barely managed to speak.
"I buried him."
Silence.
"What?"
Marcus stepped closer to the screen.
"It can't be."
"But that's..."
His voice broke.
"...my older brother."
Jonathan frowned.
"I thought you were an only child."
May you like
Marcus slowly looked away from the monitor.
"So did I."
