CHAPTER 9 — THE UNDERGROUND EMPIRE

Marcus stood frozen.
The underground facility looked nothing like a forgotten hospital basement.
It resembled the headquarters of a multinational technology company.
Glass laboratories stretched in every direction.
Rows of biometric scanners glowed blue along the walls.
Armed guards in black tactical uniforms stood silently at every intersection.
The air smelled of fresh paint and expensive machinery.
This place hadn't been abandoned.
It had been operating.
For years.
Richard Thorne smiled as if welcoming guests into his own home.
"I was beginning to think you wouldn't come."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"You expected me."
Richard nodded.
"Of course."
"You've always followed the truth."
"Even when it hurt."
Jonathan discreetly raised his pistol.
Immediately—
Red laser dots appeared across his chest.
Hidden snipers.
At least a dozen.
Richard sighed.
"Please."
"No unnecessary violence."
Jonathan slowly lowered the weapon.
Marcus took one step forward.
"My wife."
Richard's smile faded.
"She's safe."
"Where is she?"
"I'll show you."
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"If you've harmed her—"
Richard interrupted.
"I spent thirty-three years protecting you."
"I have no reason to harm the mother of my grandchild."
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"You've lost the right to call that child your grandchild."
For the first time...
Richard looked genuinely wounded.
Only for a moment.
Then his expression returned to its familiar calm.
"You've opened the envelope."
"Yes."
"So now you know."
Marcus stared directly into the man who had raised him.
"You lied to me my entire life."
Richard answered quietly,
"I raised you."
"I fed you."
"I educated you."
"I protected you."
Marcus stepped closer.
"You stole my identity."
Silence echoed through the underground corridor.
The guards remained motionless.
Jonathan carefully studied every security camera.
Adrian couldn't stop staring at Richard.
Finally...
Richard spoke.
"I never stole anything."
Marcus almost laughed.
"The adoption papers say otherwise."
Richard nodded.
"They're authentic."
"So is the DNA."
"Then explain it."
Richard looked toward Adrian.
"You should tell him."
Adrian slowly shook his head.
"No."
"You created this."
"You explain it."
Richard sighed deeply.
"Very well."
He walked toward the enormous glass wall overlooking the central laboratory.
"Thirty-three years ago..."
"...your mother wasn't murdered because of money."
Marcus frowned.
"Then why?"
Richard answered without turning around.
"Because she discovered something."
Jonathan quietly recorded every word.
Richard continued.
"Back then..."
"The federal government secretly funded advanced medical research."
"Genetics."
"Artificial intelligence."
"Military medicine."
"Our hospital became one of the research centers."
Marcus interrupted.
"What does that have to do with my mother?"
Richard looked back.
"Everything."
He pressed a button on the wall.
A giant display screen lit up.
Dozens of old photographs appeared.
Scientists.
Doctors.
Military officials.
Hospital executives.
One photograph stopped Marcus cold.
His mother.
Sarah Bennett.
Wearing a white lab coat.
Standing beside Richard.
Smiling.
Marcus whispered,
"She worked here."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"She was one of our best researchers."
Richard continued.
"Sarah discovered that someone inside the project was selling classified medical technology overseas."
Marcus frowned.
"So she reported them."
Richard looked away.
"She tried."
Another photograph appeared.
A young woman holding a newborn baby.
Marcus.
The date read:
June 14, 1993
Richard spoke quietly.
"Three weeks later..."
"...Sarah disappeared."
Marcus corrected him.
"She was murdered."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
Marcus clenched his fists.
"Who killed her?"
Richard remained silent.
Marcus shouted,
"WHO?"
Richard answered with only two words.
"We never proved it."
At that exact moment...
Deep inside the underground corridor...
Khloe and Mary cautiously followed the illuminated passage.
Every room they passed contained advanced equipment.
Some laboratories stood empty.
Others contained computers still running.
One room held rows of cryogenic storage units.
Another contained genetic sequencing machines.
Mary whispered,
"This place costs billions."
Khloe nodded.
"And no one knows it exists."
They reached a reinforced glass door.
Inside sat dozens of filing cabinets.
Paper records.
Thousands of them.
Unlike digital files...
Paper couldn't be hacked.
Khloe noticed a label.
PROJECT PHOENIX
Her stomach tightened.
She had seen those words before.
Inside the envelope.
Back in the central hall...
Jonathan's phone vibrated.
One of his field agents.
He answered quietly.
"Go."
The voice replied urgently,
"Sir..."
"We identified one of the attackers."
Jonathan frowned.
"Who?"
"He isn't a mercenary."
"He served on Richard Thorne's personal security team."
Jonathan slowly looked toward Richard.
"Twenty-four years ago."
Marcus heard everything.
He turned back toward Richard.
"So you admit it."
Richard frowned.
"Admit what?"
"Your men attacked my wife."
Richard's expression became genuinely confused.
"No."
Marcus laughed.
"Really?"
"I've seen the evidence."
Richard looked directly at Jonathan.
"Show me."
Jonathan hesitated.
Marcus nodded.
Jonathan handed Richard the tablet containing the surveillance footage.
Richard watched the attack.
The fake maintenance workers.
The gunfire.
The chase.
His face became increasingly grim.
Finally...
He lowered the tablet.
"These men did work for me."
Marcus stepped forward.
"So it was you."
Richard unexpectedly shook his head.
"No."
Marcus stared.
"They were fired fifteen years ago."
Jonathan frowned.
"What?"
Richard pointed toward the screen.
"The man leading them..."
"...is supposed to be dead."
Silence.
Marcus looked back at the frozen image.
Richard continued.
"I personally attended his funeral."
Jonathan exchanged a glance with Adrian.
Another dead man.
Another impossible return.
Suddenly...
The facility lights dimmed.
Every monitor flashed red.
A computerized voice echoed throughout the underground complex.
WARNING
UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED
Richard's calm expression vanished.
"That's impossible."
An engineer ran toward him.
"Sir!"
"They've breached the internal network!"
Richard frowned.
"Who?"
The engineer swallowed.
"We don't know."
"They're using Master-Level credentials."
Richard's face lost all color.
"There are only two Master accounts."
"Mine..."
"...and—"
He stopped speaking.
Marcus finished the sentence.
"And whose?"
The engineer answered before Richard could.
"Dr. Sarah Bennett."
The room fell completely silent.
Adrian whispered,
"Sarah has been dead for thirty-three years."
The engineer nodded.
"I know."
"But someone just logged in..."
"...using her biometric identity."
Across the facility...
Khloe stood in front of the PROJECT PHOENIX archive.
Without warning...
Every cabinet unlocked simultaneously.
Thousands of confidential files slid open by themselves.
One folder fell onto the floor at her feet.
Almost as if someone had placed it there deliberately.
She picked it up.
The cover read:
SUBJECT M-01
She opened it.
The first page contained a photograph.
Not of Marcus.
Not of Ethan.
Not of Richard.
It was a picture of herself.
Taken when she was only six years old.
Her breathing stopped.
The second page carried one chilling sentence.
SUBJECT HAS BEEN UNDER OBSERVATION SINCE CHILDHOOD.
Khloe slowly looked up.
May you like
Someone had been watching her...
Long before she ever met Marcus Thorne.
