CHAPTER 2 — THE ENVELOPE

The emergency elevator doors closed with a metallic hiss, carrying Khloe Thorne toward the operating floor.

Marcus never took his eyes off the glowing numbers above the elevator.

17...

18...

19...

Then the display went dark.

She was gone.

For now.

Behind him, the hallway erupted into controlled chaos. Nurses hurried between rooms, security officers sealed every entrance to the VIP wing, and hospital administrators whispered nervously into their phones.

No one dared approach Marcus.

Everyone knew that look.

The billionaire wasn't grieving anymore.

He was thinking.

And when Marcus Thorne started thinking, powerful people usually found themselves in trouble.

Isabella Rossi's hands trembled despite every effort to hide it.

"This is insane," she said, forcing confidence into her voice. "The video doesn't tell the whole story."

No one answered.

She looked toward Dr. Adrian Bennett.

"You know hospitals have blind spots. Cameras don't capture everything."

Adrian folded his arms.

"This one did."

"It captured enough."

A security officer stepped forward.

"Ms. Rossi, we'd like you to accompany us."

"I'm not under arrest."

"Not yet."

Those two words sent a chill through the hallway.

Marcus replayed the footage for a third time.

Not because he doubted Isabella's guilt.

That much was obvious.

No...

He was searching for something else.

At precisely 9:42:17 p.m., Khloe quietly slipped a white envelope into her handbag while Isabella was pacing near the window.

She did it naturally.

Almost automatically.

As if she had practiced the movement.

No one watching the attack would have noticed.

Marcus almost hadn't.

But he knew that envelope.

Cream-colored.

Handmade Italian paper.

A blue wax seal.

The Thorne family crest.

Impossible.

Only three copies had ever existed.

One had disappeared from his office.

The other remained inside his attorney's vault.

The third...

Marcus's heartbeat quickened.

He suddenly wasn't sure where the third copy was supposed to be.

Adrian stepped beside him.

"What are you looking at?"

Marcus enlarged the image.

"There."

Adrian squinted.

"The envelope?"

Marcus nodded.

"You recognize it?"

"No."

Marcus remained silent.

He couldn't explain.

Not yet.

Because if Adrian learned what was inside...

Everything would change.

Three weeks earlier...

Marcus had returned to his private office after a board meeting.

Nothing looked unusual.

The expensive artwork remained untouched.

The safe was locked.

His laptop sat exactly where he'd left it.

Yet something felt...

Wrong.

He opened the safe.

Inside were dozens of confidential files.

Everything appeared intact.

Until he reached the bottom shelf.

One envelope was missing.

He had searched the office for hours.

His security team reviewed surveillance.

No forced entry.

No fingerprints.

No alarms.

Nothing.

It was as though the document had vanished into thin air.

Marcus had told no one.

Not even Khloe.

Especially not Khloe.

Back in the present, his phone vibrated.

The caller ID read:

JONATHAN REEVES

Chief of Security.

Marcus answered immediately.

"Talk."

"We've secured every camera in the hospital."

"Good."

"But..."

Marcus hated that word.

"But what?"

"There was another visitor tonight."

Marcus frowned.

"What visitor?"

Jonathan hesitated.

"They entered through the underground executive entrance."

"No appointment."

"No security screening."

"They stayed exactly twelve minutes."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Name."

"We don't have one."

"The visitor used a temporary executive pass."

"Who authorized it?"

"We're trying to find out."

Marcus looked toward Adrian.

Someone else had been inside the hospital.

Someone with enough influence to bypass every security protocol.

And no one knew who.

Meanwhile...

On the twenty-first floor...

Doctors surrounded Khloe inside Trauma Room Three.

Monitors beeped steadily.

A fetal heartbeat echoed through the room.

Dr. Emily Carson gently examined her injuries.

"You've been incredibly lucky."

Khloe closed her eyes.

"It doesn't feel lucky."

Emily offered a sympathetic smile.

"The baby is stable."

"No signs of placental separation."

"You'll need close observation."

Khloe exhaled shakily.

"Can I see Marcus?"

"Not yet."

"We need to finish the scans."

Khloe nodded.

Then slowly reached toward her handbag resting on a nearby chair.

Still there.

The envelope remained hidden inside.

She quietly relaxed.

No one noticed.

Except someone standing outside the room.

A woman wearing blue hospital scrubs.

She wasn't a nurse.

She wasn't a doctor.

She wasn't even employed by the hospital.

Yet she watched every movement through the narrow window in the door.

Then she smiled.

Very slightly.

Downstairs...

Security escorted Isabella into a private conference room.

She demanded a lawyer.

She demanded her phone.

She demanded to leave.

Instead, she received silence.

Finally she laughed.

"You people think you've won."

One officer ignored her.

Another reviewed paperwork.

Isabella leaned back.

"You have no idea what's coming."

The older officer finally looked up.

"What does that mean?"

She smiled.

"It means Marcus can't afford to destroy me."

"Why not?"

"Because if I fall..."

She leaned forward.

"...he falls with me."

The officers exchanged uneasy glances.

At that exact moment...

Marcus entered the hospital's digital security center.

Rows of giant monitors displayed every hallway.

Every elevator.

Every entrance.

Jonathan Reeves stood waiting.

"We've isolated Camera 17A."

Marcus nodded.

"Show me everything."

"Before the attack."

"After the attack."

"I want every second."

The footage rolled backward.

9:05 p.m.

Khloe entered alone.

9:14.

A housekeeping employee cleaned the suite.

9:26.

The employee left.

9:31.

Isabella arrived.

Normal.

Nothing unusual.

Marcus frowned.

"Go back."

Jonathan rewound.

Further.

9:11.

Marcus suddenly pointed.

"Stop."

The screen froze.

A maintenance worker pushed a supply cart past the suite.

Head down.

Face partially hidden beneath a cap.

Completely ordinary.

Yet Marcus noticed something strange.

The worker never entered another room.

He walked directly past every suite.

Straight toward Khloe's.

Then...

The camera glitched.

Just two seconds.

When the image returned...

The maintenance worker was gone.

Marcus stared.

"Where did he go?"

Jonathan typed rapidly.

"No exit."

"No elevator."

"No stairwell."

"He disappeared."

Marcus's voice became dangerously quiet.

"That's impossible."

Jonathan nodded.

"I know."

Unless...

The worker had never been maintenance at all.

Twenty-one floors above...

Khloe lay awake.

Unable to sleep.

Her fingers rested protectively over her unborn child.

A soft knock came at the door.

She looked up.

"Marcus?"

No answer.

The door slowly opened.

A nurse entered carrying medication.

"I have something to help you rest."

Khloe frowned.

"I don't recognize you."

The woman smiled gently.

"I'm covering the night shift."

She approached the bed.

Prepared the syringe.

Then leaned close enough for only Khloe to hear.

"You should have destroyed the envelope."

Khloe's entire body froze.

Her eyes widened.

The nurse's smile disappeared.

"You've made a terrible mistake."

Khloe reached for the emergency call button—

But the woman grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

"You don't understand."

"If Marcus sees what's inside..."

May you like

The fake nurse looked directly into her terrified eyes.

"...none of you will survive."
