CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET INSIDE THE ENVELOPE

The first rays of dawn crept across the windows of St. Vincent Medical Center.
For most of the city, it was the beginning of another ordinary morning.
For the Thorne family...
It was the beginning of a war.
Marcus had not slept.
He remained outside Khloe's hospital room, his jacket draped over the back of a chair, his shirt sleeves rolled to his elbows. Three untouched cups of coffee sat on the table beside stacks of security reports.
Every report led to another question.
None provided an answer.
Jonathan Reeves entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.
"We recovered this from Suite 1708."
Marcus looked up.
Inside the transparent bag lay dozens of broken crystal fragments from the shattered glass Isabella had knocked onto the marble floor.
"So?"
Jonathan placed the bag on the table.
"Our forensic team found fingerprints."
Marcus frowned.
"Isabella's?"
"Yes."
"Khloe's?"
"Yes."
Jonathan hesitated.
Marcus immediately noticed.
"And?"
"There was a third set."
Marcus slowly stood.
"Whose?"
Jonathan shook his head.
"They don't belong to anyone in any federal database."
Marcus's expression darkened.
"The same person from the fake nurse?"
"We're checking."
"If it matches..."
Marcus finished the sentence himself.
"Then someone else was inside that suite before the attack."
Jonathan nodded.
"Exactly."
Inside Room 2103...
Khloe finally opened her eyes.
Her body ached with every movement.
But the first thing she did was place both hands over her stomach.
A tiny kick answered her touch.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Thank God..."
Dr. Emily Carson smiled as she entered.
"Someone's awake."
"How's my baby?"
Emily checked the monitor.
"Strong heartbeat."
"No internal bleeding."
"You and your little one are incredibly fortunate."
Khloe smiled weakly.
"For now."
Emily noticed the sadness in her eyes.
"What aren't you telling us?"
Khloe looked toward the window.
"If I tell the truth..."
"...people will die."
An hour later...
Marcus entered quietly.
For a moment, they simply looked at one another.
No words.
No accusations.
Just exhaustion.
Finally Marcus sat beside the bed.
"I know you took the envelope."
Khloe nodded.
"I know."
"I also know you didn't do it for money."
Another nod.
Marcus leaned forward.
"Please."
"No more secrets."
Khloe closed her eyes.
"I wanted to tell you."
"When?"
"When I knew who I could trust."
Marcus looked away.
"And you weren't sure that was me."
Khloe's silence answered for her.
The realization hurt more than he expected.
She reached beneath her pillow.
The cream-colored envelope remained exactly where she had hidden it.
Untouched.
The blue wax seal reflected the morning light.
Marcus stared at it.
"This document has already nearly gotten you killed."
Khloe whispered,
"I know."
"Then why haven't you destroyed it?"
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Because once you read it..."
"...you'll finally understand why your father wants me dead."
Marcus carefully broke the wax seal.
The sound echoed through the silent room.
Inside were several aged documents.
Old photographs.
Legal records.
A handwritten letter.
Everything looked decades old.
Marcus unfolded the first page.
His breathing slowed.
Then stopped.
At the top of the document appeared the words:
CONFIDENTIAL ADOPTION RECORD
Date:
May 14, 1993
Marcus frowned.
He kept reading.
Then his face turned pale.
"No..."
Khloe watched him carefully.
"What is it?"
Marcus couldn't answer.
His eyes remained locked on one line.
Child's Name: Marcus Alexander Bennett
Not Marcus Thorne.
Marcus Bennett.
He read it again.
And again.
It didn't change.
His hands began trembling.
"This..."
"This has to be fake."
Khloe quietly handed him another document.
Marcus unfolded the second file.
DNA authorization.
Hospital birth records.
Court certification.
Every page carried official seals.
Every signature had been notarized.
Every date matched.
Then he reached the final page.
Biological Father: Unknown
Biological Mother: Sarah Bennett
Marcus stared blankly.
Sarah Bennett.
Adrian's younger sister.
A woman who had died in a car accident thirty-three years earlier.
The woman Marcus had always known as his "Aunt Sarah."
He looked up slowly.
"Uncle Adrian..."
"...is my real uncle."
Khloe nodded.
"Yes."
Marcus whispered,
"Richard isn't my father."
The room fell silent.
Years of memories rushed through Marcus's mind.
Richard teaching him business strategy.
Richard insisting emotions were weakness.
Richard refusing to hug him.
Richard constantly reminding him that family honor came before personal happiness.
Marcus had spent his entire life trying to earn a father's approval.
What if...
Richard had never been his father at all?
A knock interrupted the moment.
Adrian entered carrying breakfast.
He immediately noticed Marcus's expression.
"What happened?"
Neither Marcus nor Khloe answered.
Marcus slowly handed him the adoption papers.
Adrian frowned.
As he read the first page...
The tray slipped from his hands.
Coffee splashed across the floor.
The room became deathly quiet.
Adrian looked as though someone had stolen the air from his lungs.
"Where..."
"...did you get this?"
Marcus asked quietly,
"Is it true?"
Adrian couldn't speak.
He simply lowered himself into the nearest chair.
Thirty-three years of secrets weighed heavily on his shoulders.
Finally...
He whispered,
"I prayed..."
"...that you would never find out."
Marcus stood.
"So it's true."
Adrian slowly nodded.
Marcus's voice cracked.
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"For my entire life?"
"Yes."
Marcus looked as though the ground beneath him had disappeared.
"You watched Richard pretend to be my father."
"I had no choice."
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"No choice?"
"He stole my life."
"He stole my identity."
"He stole my family."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"It wasn't that simple."
Marcus slammed the documents onto the bed.
"Then explain it."
Adrian stared at the old photograph lying inside the envelope.
Three smiling young adults.
Richard.
Sarah.
And himself.
"We were all best friends once."
"Before the money."
"Before the lies."
"Before someone was murdered."
Marcus froze.
"Murdered?"
Adrian nodded.
"The story you've been told for thirty-three years..."
"...isn't true."
"Sarah didn't die in an accident."
Khloe gasped.
Marcus whispered,
"What are you saying?"
Adrian looked directly into Marcus's eyes.
"Your mother..."
"...was killed."
Before anyone could ask another question...
Hospital alarms suddenly blared throughout the building.
Red emergency lights flashed.
A security officer burst into the room.
"Mr. Thorne!"
Marcus turned.
"What happened?"
The officer's face was white.
"The power grid has been hacked."
"Every electronic door in the hospital has just unlocked."
Jonathan's voice crackled over Marcus's phone.
"Marcus!"
"They're inside!"
Marcus grabbed the phone.
"Who?"
Jonathan answered in a frantic whisper.
"I don't know how many..."
"...but they're heading straight for Khloe."
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
Heavy footsteps echoed outside.
Not one person.
Not two.
Dozens.
Someone had just turned the hospital into an open battlefield.
And this time...
May you like
They hadn't come to scare anyone.
They had come to finish the job.
