CHAPTER 17 — THE LAST PHOENIX

11:56

11:55

11:54

The countdown echoed through the underground chamber.

Every second felt louder than the last.

The room that had once been built to protect secrets had become a battlefield.

Marcus looked around.

His mother.

His sister.

His wife.

The brother he thought was dead.

The grandfather he thought was gone.

Everyone connected to the same hidden nightmare.

Everyone carrying a different piece of the truth.

Sarah moved toward the server.

"We have to shut it down."

Jonathan immediately followed.

"How?"

Sarah looked at the screen.

"I don't know."

Everyone turned.

"You don't know?"

Sarah shook her head.

"Alexander changed the system after I disappeared."

"He removed my access."

Richard stepped forward.

"But the server recognized you."

Sarah looked at him.

"Because it wasn't recognizing me."

"It was recognizing my memories."

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Sarah looked at him.

"It means Alexander didn't create a machine that needed a password."

"He created a machine that needed a person."

The countdown continued.

10:40

10:39

Khloe looked at the server.

"Why does it need us?"

Sarah looked at her.

"Because Phoenix was never about one person."

"It was always about combining the subjects."

Marcus looked toward Emma.

"Three children."

Sarah nodded.

"Three different outcomes."

She pointed toward the screen.

"Marcus represented leadership."

"Emma represented memory."

"Elizabeth represented adaptation."

Khloe swallowed.

"And Ethan?"

Sarah's expression became painful.

"Ethan represented control."

The room became silent.

Marcus looked toward the locked doors.

"So Ethan wasn't a victim."

Sarah looked away.

"No."

"He was the first person Alexander successfully changed."

Suddenly, every monitor switched on.

Ethan appeared on the screens.

Standing somewhere inside the facility.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost peaceful.

"Mother."

Sarah looked up.

"Ethan."

For a moment...

The woman who had survived thirty years of fear looked like a mother again.

Not a scientist.

Not a survivor.

Just a mother.

"Why?"

Ethan smiled sadly.

"You still don't understand."

"I saved us."

Marcus stepped toward the screen.

"You attacked Khloe."

"I exposed the truth."

"You nearly killed her."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Because she was never supposed to be with you."

Marcus froze.

"What?"

Ethan continued.

"That was the mistake."

"Alexander predicted every possibility except one."

"Love."

Khloe stared.

Ethan looked directly at her.

"You changed him."

"You made him weaker."

Marcus clenched his fists.

"No."

Ethan smiled.

"Exactly."

"That's why you're dangerous."

The countdown continued.

09:00

Richard suddenly walked toward the server.

Everyone turned.

"What are you doing?"

Richard didn't answer.

He placed his hand on the biometric scanner.

Nothing happened.

The system rejected him.

ACCESS DENIED

Richard looked disappointed.

"I knew it."

Marcus watched.

"You tried to stop it."

Richard nodded.

"Years ago."

"But Alexander was always ahead of me."

Sarah looked at him.

"You knew Ethan was the final subject."

Richard lowered his head.

"Yes."

Marcus stared.

"You knew everything."

Richard's voice broke.

"And I failed everyone."

For the first time...

The billionaire who controlled companies and governments looked powerless.

"I thought money could protect my family."

"I thought influence could defeat Alexander."

"I was wrong."

A loud alarm interrupted.

08:00

Jonathan examined the server.

"There must be a physical shutdown."

Sarah nodded.

"Somewhere below this room."

Emma looked around.

"There is another level."

Everyone turned.

Emma walked toward the wall.

"I remember."

Marcus stared.

"You remember this place?"

Emma nodded.

"I was brought here as a child."

She pressed her hand against a hidden section of the wall.

A door opened.

Behind it...

A staircase.

Descending deeper.

Ethan appeared on the screen again.

"Don't go down there."

Everyone stopped.

Marcus looked up.

"Why?"

Ethan's expression changed.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

"Because that's where it began."

Sarah stepped toward the stairs.

"No."

Ethan's voice became urgent.

"Mother."

"Don't."

Everyone noticed.

Ethan wasn't threatening.

He was warning.

Marcus looked at him.

"You actually care."

Ethan remained silent.

Marcus continued.

"After everything..."

"You still care."

Ethan looked away.

"That's the problem."

The countdown continued.

07:00

They descended.

The deeper they went...

The older the facility became.

No modern equipment.

No glass walls.

Only stone corridors.

At the bottom was a single room.

A laboratory frozen in time.

On the wall:

PROJECT PHOENIX — ORIGINAL SITE

Inside were hundreds of handwritten notes.

Not computers.

Not digital files.

The beginning.

Sarah walked slowly.

"I haven't been here since 1993."

Marcus found a journal.

The cover had his grandfather's initials.

A.T.

He opened it.

The first page contained one sentence:

"The greatest discovery will not be creating a better human."

"It will be creating a human who believes they are free."

Marcus turned the page.

More notes.

More experiments.

Then...

A name.

SUBJECT P-00

Below it:

FAILED EMOTIONAL SUPPRESSION TEST

Marcus looked confused.

"Failed?"

Sarah took the journal.

Her face changed.

"Ethan wasn't the success."

"He's the failure."

Everyone froze.

Emma whispered,

"Then why is he alive?"

Sarah looked at the final page.

A handwritten message.

From Alexander.

She read aloud:

"The failed subject may become the most dangerous."

"Because emotion survived."

The countdown reached:

05:00

Suddenly...

The laboratory lights turned on.

A hidden glass chamber opened.

Inside was another server.

But this one was different.

No technology.

No screens.

Only one object.

A small child's recording device.

Sarah picked it up.

Her hands shook.

"What is this?"

A voice played automatically.

A child's voice.

Young.

Afraid.

"Mom..."

Everyone froze.

It was Ethan.

As a child.

The recording continued.

"Grandfather says I have to forget."

"He says emotions are dangerous."

"But I don't want to forget."

A pause.

Then:

"Please..."

"Someone remember me."

Marcus looked toward the screen.

Ethan was watching.

And for the first time...

The emotionless man looked broken.

The countdown continued.

04:00

Sarah held the device.

"Ethan..."

The screen flickered.

Ethan's voice finally appeared.

"I remember everything."

Everyone looked up.

"I remember the experiments."

"I remember the pain."

"I remember you leaving."

Sarah whispered,

"I was trying to save you."

Ethan answered:

"I know."

Silence.

Then Ethan said something nobody expected.

"That's why I never stopped protecting you."

Marcus looked confused.

"Then why attack us?"

Ethan looked at him.

"Because Alexander was right about one thing."

"The Phoenix children cannot all survive."

The countdown continued.

03:00

The server suddenly displayed:

FINAL SELECTION REQUIRED

Four names appeared:

MARCUS THORNE

EMMA THORNE

ELIZABETH PARKER

ETHAN THORNE

Then a fifth option appeared.

Everyone stared.

SARAH BENNETT

Sarah whispered:

"No."

Marcus looked at the screen.

"The system wants to choose."

Sarah nodded.

"And someone must be sacrificed."

The doors behind them locked.

The room began filling with gas.

Jonathan shouted,

"We're running out of time!"

Ethan's voice echoed.

"There's only one way."

Marcus looked up.

"What?"

Ethan answered quietly:

"One Phoenix subject must voluntarily give themselves to the system."

Everyone froze.

Because they all knew what that meant.

Someone had to choose death.

And the person most likely to make that choice...

Was the one who had spent thirty years protecting everyone else.

Sarah.

The timer reached:

02:00

Sarah looked at her children.

Marcus.

Emma.

Khloe.

Then Ethan.

A mother looking at the family she never got to have.

She smiled sadly.

"I always wanted one more chance."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"Mom..."

She touched his face.

"I already lost thirty years."

"I won't lose another life."

She stepped toward the server.

Marcus grabbed her hand.

"Don't."

Sarah looked at him.

"My son..."

"Trust me."

The system activated.

01:00

Then suddenly...

The countdown stopped.

Everyone froze.

A new message appeared.

FINAL SUBJECT IDENTIFIED

The screen flashed.

Not Sarah.

Not Marcus.

Not Ethan.

Not Emma.

Not Khloe.

A sixth name appeared.

Everyone stared.

Because nobody knew this person.

Except Alexander.

SUBJECT P-00B

STATUS: ACTIVE

A hidden door opened behind the laboratory.

Footsteps echoed.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone entered.

May you like

And the person walking toward them...

Was someone they all thought was impossible.
