CHAPTER 18 — THE CHILD WHO WAS ERASED

The footsteps grew louder.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Every person inside the original Phoenix laboratory turned toward the hidden doorway.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Because everyone already knew one thing.
Whoever was coming...
Was the secret Alexander Thorne had protected above all others.
The figure stepped into the light.
A young man.
Around thirty years old.
Dark hair.
Cold expression.
But the most disturbing thing...
Was his eyes.
They were the same blue eyes shared by the Thorne family.
Marcus stared.
Impossible.
He had seen those eyes before.
In his own reflection.
In Ethan.
In Emma.
In old photographs.
The stranger looked at Marcus.
And smiled.
"Hello."
Marcus couldn't answer.
The man continued.
"I've been waiting a long time."
Richard stepped backward.
"No..."
The stranger looked at him.
"Still afraid of me, Richard?"
Richard's face became pale.
Marcus noticed.
"You know him."
Richard whispered:
"Yes."
"Who is he?"
Richard couldn't speak.
The stranger answered for him.
"My name is Adrian Thorne."
Everyone froze.
Adrian.
But Adrian Bennett was standing beside them.
The man who had helped them uncover Phoenix.
The man who had been their ally.
Jonathan immediately raised his weapon.
"Two Adrians?"
The stranger smiled.
"Not two."
"One was given a different name."
Marcus looked between them.
"This is impossible."
The stranger laughed softly.
"That's what they always said."
The original Adrian Bennett looked devastated.
"No..."
The stranger looked at him.
"You really thought you escaped?"
Adrian's voice trembled.
"I thought you died."
The stranger smiled.
"I did."
A pause.
"Then Alexander brought me back."
Sarah stared.
Her face filled with horror.
"No..."
The stranger looked at her.
"You remember."
Sarah whispered:
"Subject P-00B."
Marcus looked confused.
"What is happening?"
Sarah looked at her son.
Her voice barely worked.
"Ethan wasn't the first."
She looked at the stranger.
"And he wasn't the last."
The man stepped closer.
"Alexander created multiple Phoenix subjects."
"Each one designed for a different purpose."
He pointed toward Ethan.
"Control."
Toward Emma.
"Memory."
Toward Marcus.
"Leadership."
Toward Khloe.
"Adaptation."
Then he touched his own chest.
"And me..."
"Correction."
Jonathan frowned.
"Correction?"
The man smiled.
"The ability to fix failures."
Ethan suddenly appeared on the monitor again.
His face was no longer calm.
He looked furious.
"You weren't supposed to wake up."
The stranger looked at the screen.
"Neither were you."
Marcus looked at Ethan.
"You knew about him."
Ethan remained silent.
That was enough.
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Everyone knew except me."
The stranger laughed.
"That's the family tradition."
"Everyone protects Marcus."
"Everyone lies to Marcus."
"Everyone decides what Marcus can handle."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Who are you really?"
The stranger looked at him.
"The brother you were never allowed to meet."
Silence.
Emma whispered:
"Another brother?"
The stranger nodded.
"Alexander had three children."
"Then he created more."
Richard finally spoke.
"You were never supposed to exist."
The stranger smiled.
"Exactly."
The countdown appeared again.
00:59
The system had restarted.
Everyone looked at the screen.
FINAL SELECTION REQUIRED
The stranger walked toward the server.
"I can finish this."
Marcus blocked him.
"No."
The stranger looked amused.
"You don't even know what you're stopping."
"I know enough."
"You've destroyed enough lives."
The stranger tilted his head.
"You still think this is about destruction."
"It's about survival."
He pointed toward the server.
"The world outside this room has no idea what is coming."
Sarah frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
The stranger's expression became serious.
"Alexander wasn't building Phoenix to control humanity."
"He was preparing for something."
Jonathan looked suspicious.
"Something?"
The stranger nodded.
"An event."
Marcus stared.
"What event?"
The stranger looked toward the ceiling.
"The reason Alexander started Project Phoenix in the first place."
The lights flickered.
The entire underground facility shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
A warning appeared.
EXTERNAL THREAT DETECTED
Jonathan checked his device.
His face changed.
"What?"
Marcus looked at him.
"What is it?"
Jonathan swallowed.
"The hospital above us."
"What about it?"
"Every emergency system just activated."
A new message appeared on the main screen.
Not from Alexander.
Not from the server.
From outside.
PHOENIX IS NOT THE BEGINNING.
IT IS THE RESPONSE.
Everyone looked at Sarah.
She understood immediately.
"No..."
Marcus grabbed her arm.
"What?"
Sarah stared at the message.
"For thirty years..."
"I thought Alexander was the enemy."
Her voice shook.
"But he wasn't preparing an attack."
"He was preparing for one."
The stranger nodded.
"Now you understand."
Marcus looked at him.
"What is coming?"
The stranger's expression became cold.
"The reason Alexander created children who could survive."
The lights suddenly went out.
A loud impact shook the facility.
Something had entered the underground complex.
Not one person.
Not a small group.
An entire team.
Jonathan heard movement above.
"Multiple targets."
"Armed."
"Highly trained."
Ethan's voice came through the speakers.
"Everyone listen."
For the first time...
He sounded afraid.
"They're here."
Marcus looked at the monitor.
"Who?"
A long pause.
Then Ethan answered:
"The people who funded Phoenix."
The laboratory doors began unlocking one by one.
Heavy footsteps approached.
The stranger looked at Marcus.
"Now you finally understand."
Marcus raised his weapon.
"Understand what?"
The stranger looked toward the door.
"That your family wasn't hiding from the world."
"They were hiding the world from them."
The doors opened.
A group of armed soldiers entered.
But they weren't wearing government uniforms.
They wore a symbol.
A black phoenix.
The leader stepped forward.
Everyone recognized him.
Because his face had appeared in old Phoenix files.
A man who was supposed to be dead.
Daniel Mercer.
But this Daniel was younger.
Different.
Impossible.
Sarah whispered:
"No..."
The stranger looked at her.
"Not him."
"His son."
The young man smiled.
"My father failed."
"I won't."
He looked at Marcus.
"The Phoenix children are property."
"Not family."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Wrong."
The man smiled.
"Why?"
Marcus looked at Khloe.
At Emma.
At Ethan.
At Sarah.
"Because we choose."
For the first time...
The Phoenix system responded.
The server screen changed.
A final message appeared.
UNEXPECTED VARIABLE DETECTED
FREE WILL CONFIRMED
Everyone stared.
Sarah whispered:
"The system..."
"It learned."
The young Daniel frowned.
"What did you do?"
Nobody answered.
Because even Alexander's creation had reached a conclusion.
The Phoenix subjects were no longer experiments.
They were people.
Then the server displayed one final warning.
PHASE FOUR ACTIVATED
THE ORIGINAL CREATOR HAS AWAKENED
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked at Richard.
"Alexander?"
Richard slowly shook his head.
"No."
Sarah's face turned pale.
"Someone else."
Deep beneath the facility...
Another chamber opened.
A heartbeat began.
A voice whispered from the darkness:
"After all these years..."
May you like
"Finally..."
"My children have returned."
