Chapter 18

Chapter 18: The Sting in the Boardroom
The mediation took place in the towering glass skyscraper of Arturo Vargas's corporate headquarters.
Arturo sat at the head of a massive mahogany table. He was a powerfully built man in a bespoke suit, exuding an aura of absolute control. He flanked himself with three expensive, aggressive corporate lawyers.
When the doors opened, Sofia walked in. She wasn't wearing a baggy sweater. She wore a tailored, crimson-red dress and walked with her head held high. Renata and Valeria flanked her like a pair of lethal bodyguards.
Arturo laughed, a patronizing, booming sound. "Sofia, darling. I see you brought the famous Renata. The woman who burned down the Ibarra family. I must admit, I'm flattered you think you need such heavy artillery for a simple divorce settlement."
"It isn't a simple settlement, Arturo," Sofia said, her voice remarkably steady. She sat down directly across from him.
Arturo’s lead lawyer slid a thin manila folder across the table. "Mr. Vargas is prepared to be generous. He is offering a lump sum of two hundred thousand dollars, and the lease on the condo in Polanco for three years. In exchange, you waive all rights to alimony and corporate assets."
Renata didn't even look at the folder. She slid it right back.
"Sofia rejects the offer," Renata said calmly.
Arturo narrowed his eyes. "Be careful, Renata. You may have played games with a weak boy like Alonso, but I am not the Ibarra family. I will bury you both in litigation until Sofia is living in a cardboard box."
Renata smiled. She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a thick, heavy, red envelope. The exact same color as the one she had carried to her own anniversary dinner.
She slid it across the table until it rested right in front of Arturo.
"Open it," Renata commanded softly.
Arturo hesitated, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his arrogant face. He opened the envelope.
He pulled out the heavily documented proof of his Delaware shell corporations, his Panamanian trusts, and the wire transfers linking his personal accounts to massive tax evasion schemes. The color rapidly drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly and pale. His three lawyers leaned in, their eyes widening in horror as they realized their client had lied to them about his exposure.
"We are not here to negotiate a two-hundred-thousand-dollar settlement, Arturo," Renata said, leaning forward, resting her elbows on the table. "We are here for twenty million dollars. Fifty percent of your hidden assets. Transferred into a secure account by 5:00 PM tomorrow."
Arturo slammed his fist on the table, his face turning purple. "This is extortion! I'll have you arrested!"
"It's not extortion. It's an equitable division of marital assets," Valeria chimed in smoothly. "If you refuse, this red envelope goes directly to the Federal Tax Authority and the Federal Prosecutor's Office. You won't just lose the money, Arturo. You will lose your company, your reputation, and you will spend the next ten years in a federal prison."
Arturo looked at Sofia. He expected her to flinch, to look away, to apologize.

Instead, Sofia looked him dead in the eye and smiled. "I finally understand the rules of the game, Arturo."
Arturo Vargas, the untouchable titan of real estate, slumped back in his chair, utterly defeated.
