Chapter 28: Checkmate

At 3:00 PM, Senator Alejandro Vargas scheduled an emergency press conference at the Senate building. He intended to announce that his wife had suffered a mental breakdown, controlling the narrative before Renata could release the documents.

He stood at the podium, adjusting his tie, looking out at the sea of reporters.

"My fellow citizens," Alejandro began, putting on his best mask of a heartbroken husband. "It is with deep sadness that I must address a private family matter..."

He didn't get to finish his sentence.

Every single journalist’s phone in the room buzzed simultaneously. It was a mass email blast from Vanguardia Legal. Attached were high-resolution PDFs of the offshore bank statements, signed contracts with cartel-backed construction firms, and a sworn, timestamped video affidavit from Isabella detailing years of physical and psychological abuse.

A reporter in the front row raised his hand, his eyes wide as he read his screen. "Senator Vargas! Can you explain the fifty-million-peso transfer to Grupo Oro? Can you comment on your wife's allegations of domestic battery?"

Alejandro’s jaw dropped. He looked at the teleprompter, then at the reporters who were suddenly shouting questions like a pack of wolves smelling blood.

He had lost control. The one thing he feared more than anything else.

He backed away from the podium, turning to his aides, but they were already stepping away from him, distancing themselves from the radioactive fallout. The cameras captured every second of his humiliating retreat as he fled the stage.
