Chapter 21: The Senator’s Wife

The offices of Vanguardia Legal did not look like a traditional law firm. There were no heavy mahogany desks, no intimidating leather chairs, and no walls of dusty legal volumes meant to make the client feel small. Renata had designed the space in the heart of Polanco to feel like a sanctuary. The walls were painted in soft, calming tones, the furniture was modern and plush, and the floor-to-ceiling windows offered a view of the sprawling Chapultepec Park.

When Renata walked into her private consultation room, the woman sitting on the sofa jumped, clutching a thick leather tote bag to her chest.

Isabella Vargas was thirty-two, breathtakingly beautiful, and married to Alejandro Vargas, one of the most powerful and ruthless senators in the Mexican government. She wore a pristine white Chanel blazer and a silk scarf, but the designer clothes could not hide the dark circles under her eyes or the faint, yellowish bruise poorly concealed by makeup on her jawline.

"Isabella," Renata said softly, offering a warm, reassuring smile as she took a seat opposite her. She didn't sit behind a desk; she sat close, establishing equality. "You’re safe here. My security detail downstairs ensures that no one comes up this elevator without my personal authorization. Alejandro does not know you are here."

Isabella’s breath hitched. She looked around the room like a trapped bird. "He knows everything, Renata. He has eyes everywhere. If he finds out I came to you... he told me he would take my son. He said he would make me look insane in the press and lock me away."

"That is exactly what a man who is terrified of losing control says," Renata replied smoothly, leaning forward. "I know the script, Isabella. I have lived the script. They build a cage of gold and tell you the world outside is full of wolves. But the only wolf is the one holding the key."

Tears finally spilled over Isabella’s dark eyelashes. With trembling hands, she unzipped her leather tote and pulled out a thick manila folder.

"I found these in his private safe at the Cuernavaca estate," Isabella whispered. "He thought I didn't know the combination. It’s all there. The offshore accounts, the kickbacks from the construction cartels, the shell companies in Panama."

Renata took the folder. As she opened it, her sharp eyes scanned the numbers, the dates, and the routing codes. Her blood hummed with adrenaline. This wasn't just a divorce case. This was the key to dismantling a corrupt empire.

"Isabella," Renata said, looking up with eyes full of absolute resolve. "By this time tomorrow, you and your son will be on a private flight to a secure location in Europe. And Senator Alejandro Vargas will be fighting for his freedom, not your custody."
