Chapter 31 - The Invisible ThreadThe peace Renata had fought so hard to secure lasted exactly six months.
It was a Tuesday evening. The offices of Vanguardia Legal were mostly empty, save for the hum of the city traffic drifting up through the glass windows. Renata was at her desk, reviewing the final construction permits for a second sanctuary in Monterrey, when Elias walked in.
He didn’t knock. He didn't carry his usual calm demeanor. In his hands was a thick, black tablet.
"We missed something," Elias said, his voice tight.
Renata set her pen down. The quiet sanctuary she had built in her mind instantly locked down into battle mode.
"Julian Montes and Senator Vargas are in federal prison, Elias. Their assets were completely liquidated. What could we have possibly missed?"
Elias stepped up to the massive digital whiteboard on the wall and plugged his tablet in. The screen flickered to life, displaying the complex web of offshore accounts, shell companies, and cartel bribes they had used to bring down Grupo Oro.
Elias highlighted a single, seemingly insignificant routing number.
"During the liquidation, international auditors traced every peso back to its origin. But this account—the one Julian used to pay off the federal judges—didn't originate from the cartel. It was a transfer from a parent trust."
Renata frowned, standing up and walking toward the board.
"A parent trust? Julian was the head of the operation."
"That’s what he wanted us to think," Elias corrected. "That’s what they wanted us to think. Julian was a high-level manager, Renata. But he wasn't the owner."
Elias tapped the screen. A new photograph appeared.
It was an older man, distinguished, with silver hair and tailored cashmere. He was smiling warmly, shaking hands with the President of the Republic at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a children's hospital.
Renata’s blood ran cold.
"Hector Del Rio," she whispered.
"The beloved philanthropist," Elias nodded grimly. "The man who practically built modern Mexico City. He isn't just connected to Grupo Oro, Renata. He is the architect behind it. He let Vargas and Julian take the fall to protect the larger syndicate."

"We didn't kill the beast, Elias," she said softly. "We just cut off one of its claws."
