Chapter 1 - The Envelope of Secrets

The heavy manila envelope landed on the sterile white sheets of my hospital bed with a dull thud.
My father did not break eye contact with Eleanor as he stood firmly by my side.
His broad shoulders seemed to take up all the oxygen in the tiny ICU room.
My trembling, bruised fingers fumbled awkwardly with the metal clasp of the envelope.
I pulled out a thick stack of glossy photographs and stapled legal documents.
The very first photograph showed my late husband walking out of a high-end jewelry store.
He was not alone.
A stunning, younger blonde woman was clinging tightly to his arm.
They were laughing together in a way I had not seen him laugh in years.
Beneath the photographs was a thick stack of bank statements from an institution I did not recognize.
The highlighted lines showed massive, recurring withdrawals draining our joint savings account.
He had been secretly funneling thousands of dollars into a private trust for months.
Eleanor leaned closer, her sharp eyes scanning the papers in my trembling hands.
The aggressive red color instantly drained from her painted face.
“This is a complete fabrication,” she sputtered, taking a slow step backward.
My father crossed his arms, looking down at her with absolute disgust.
“Those are your son's real secrets, Eleanor,” my father said with a cold, steady voice.
He explained that he had hired a private investigator three weeks ago.

My father had noticed Mark acting suspiciously and living far beyond his usual means.
The truth was that Mark had been living a double life for over a year.
