Chapter 6 - The Unborn Heir

Chloe stood at the foot of my hospital bed, her hands trembling nervously.
She was wearing an oversized sweater that looked incredibly familiar.
It took me a second to realize it was one of Mark’s old college sweatshirts.
The sheer audacity of her wearing it made my blood boil, but I kept my face blank.
"Why are you here?" I asked, my voice completely devoid of any emotion.
Chloe burst into tears, covering her face with her pale hands.
She told me that her bank accounts had been frozen by my lawyer's injunction.
She claimed she had no idea Mark was stealing money from me to fund their lifestyle.
According to her, Mark had promised that we were already separated and going through a divorce.
He had told her I was a cruel, abusive wife who refused to let him go.
I let out a harsh, bitter laugh that sent sharp pains through my cracked ribs.
I told her she was a fool for believing a man who hid his entire life in the shadows.
Chloe then dropped her hands from her face and looked me dead in the eye.
She slowly placed a hand over her lower stomach.
"I didn't just come here for the insurance money," she whispered shakily.

"I came here because I am five months pregnant with Mark's child."
The room started to spin as the devastating words echoed in my ears.
