Chapter 2 - A Mother's Denial

Eleanor’s hands began to shake as she stared at the undeniable photographic evidence.
She reached out to snatch the papers away from me.
My father instantly stepped between us, blocking her path with his massive frame.
“Do not even think about touching her or those files,” my dad warned in a low growl.
Eleanor opened her mouth to scream again, but no sound came out.
The reality of her golden child’s absolute betrayal was crashing down on her all at once.
She looked at my mother, who was still weeping silently by the window.
Then, she looked back at me, her eyes filled with a desperate, frantic denial.
“My son was a good man, and you drove him to this!” she finally shrieked.
Before she could launch another physical attack, the hospital door swung open.
Three nurses and a security guard rushed into the room, responding to the commotion.
They grabbed Eleanor by the arms of her expensive trench coat.
She thrashed and kicked, screaming obscenities about me and my entire family.
The security guard firmly escorted her out into the fluorescent hallway.
Her bitter voice echoed down the corridor until the heavy ICU doors sealed shut.
The sudden silence in the room was deafening.
My father gently took the documents from my hands and placed them back in the envelope.

He kissed my forehead softly, his eyes filled with immense sorrow.
I closed my eyes, letting the tears slide down my battered cheeks.
