Chapter 7 - A Desperate Stand

The revelation of the pregnancy hit me harder than the car crash itself.

Mark and I had tried to have a baby for three agonizing years.

We had spent thousands on fertility treatments, only for him to tell me he wanted to stop trying.

He had blamed my stressful career and told me we just needed to wait.

Now, his mistress was standing in front of me carrying the child I had desperately prayed for.

My mother gasped softly from the corner of the room, tears welling in her eyes.

My father’s face hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

He pointed a thick finger at the door and told Chloe to get out immediately.

Chloe refused to move, insisting that her baby deserved the insurance money.

She claimed Mark had taken out the policy specifically to protect their child's future.

I stared at her, feeling a strange mix of deep pity and burning hatred.

I told her that Mark’s debts would wipe out his entire estate, including her precious policy.

I promised her that I would prove he funded her life with stolen money.

Chloe’s face twisted into an ugly, desperate sneer.

She warned me that Eleanor was fully on her side.

Eleanor had known about the affair and the pregnancy for the last four months.

My mother-in-law had actually helped them pick out a house.
