Chapter 5 - Face to Face

Two long weeks passed in a haze of physical therapy and endless legal meetings.
The pain in my leg was excruciating, but I forced myself to walk with the parallel bars.
I refused to let Mark’s selfish actions destroy my physical independence.
My father brought the lawyer, Mr. Sterling, to my hospital room every single afternoon.
We painstakingly reviewed every fake signature and hidden bank account.
Mr. Sterling assured me that we had enough evidence to freeze the insurance payout.
We filed an emergency injunction to stop Chloe Adams from claiming the two million dollars.
The legal move essentially trapped the money in a court-mandated escrow account.
That same afternoon, the hospital staff informed me I had a visitor in the lobby.
They said she was a young, blonde woman who seemed extremely agitated.
I knew exactly who it was before they even said her name.
I told the nurses to let her up to my room.
My father stood up, ready to throw her out, but I asked him to stay calm.
I needed to see the woman who had stolen my husband and my future.
The door slowly creaked open, and Chloe Adams stepped into the room.

She looked nothing like the glamorous woman from the investigator's photographs.
She looked exhausted, terrified, and completely overwhelmed by the situation.
