Chapter 11 - The Black Binder

Eleanor’s lawyer opened the mediation with an incredibly arrogant speech.
He demanded that I release the insurance funds immediately and walk away with nothing.
He threatened to drag my name through the mud in a public trial if I refused.
Mr. Sterling listened patiently, taking slow, deliberate notes on his legal pad.
When the opposing lawyer finally finished, Mr. Sterling slid a thick black binder across the table.
He politely suggested that they review the contents before making any further threats.
Eleanor rolled her eyes and flipped the binder open, expecting a weak defense.
The very first page was a copy of the forged mortgage documents.
The second page was the damning text messages where Eleanor instructed Mark on how to hide the money.
The color instantly drained from Eleanor’s face, leaving her looking old and terrified.
She tried to close the binder, but her lawyer stopped her, his face turning pale as he read.
Mr. Sterling calmly explained that we were prepared to go to the police with the fraud evidence.
If we did, Eleanor would likely face severe criminal charges for conspiracy and wire fraud.
The arrogant sneer was completely wiped off Eleanor’s face in an instant.

She looked across the table at me, her eyes pleading for a mercy she did not deserve.
I simply stared back at her with the same cold indifference she had shown me in the hospital.
