Chapter 3 - The True Cost of Betrayal

The rest of the night passed in a miserable blur of painkillers and silent tears.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the headlights of the oncoming traffic.

I heard the terrible crunch of metal and Mark’s final, arrogant laugh.

Now, that memory was tainted by the image of the blonde woman in the photograph.

I realized I was mourning a man who had not existed for a very long time.

My mother sat by my bed, holding my uninjured hand throughout the darkest hours of the night.

She whispered soft prayers and apologies, wishing she could take my pain away.

When morning finally broke, a stern-looking man in a sharp suit walked into my room.

He introduced himself as Arthur Pendelton, the private investigator my father had hired.

Arthur pulled up a chair and opened a leather briefcase on his lap.

He told me he needed to explain the full extent of Mark’s financial ruin.

My husband had not just been buying jewelry for his mistress.

He had completely mortgaged our beautiful suburban home without my knowledge.

Mark had forged my signature on multiple high-interest loan documents.

The money was gone, vanished into offshore accounts and luxury car leases.

I stared at the ceiling, feeling a crushing weight press down on my fractured ribs.

The drunk driving accident was not just a tragic mistake.
