Chapter 13 - A Hollow Victory

Eleanor’s tears did not move me in the slightest.

She had been willing to destroy my entire life to cover up her own terrible mistakes.

She shakily signed the settlement documents, her hand trembling so badly she could barely hold the pen.

Her lawyer packed up his briefcase in total silence, clearly disgusted by his own client.

As they stood up to leave, Eleanor turned to me with a hateful glare.

She whispered that I was a cold, heartless woman who never deserved her son.

My father stepped forward, but I raised my hand to stop him.

I looked Eleanor directly in the eye and smiled a completely hollow smile.

I told her she was absolutely right, I never deserved a lying, cheating, thieving coward like Mark.

I told her they truly deserved each other.

Eleanor flinched as if I had physically struck her across the face.

She turned and practically ran out of the conference room.

That was the last time I ever spoke to my mother-in-law.

The immediate relief of having the legal battle finished was absolutely intoxicating.

I finally felt like I could breathe without the heavy weight of the past crushing my lungs.

But I still had one more painful loose end to tie up before I could truly move on.
