Part 2: The Man Outside the Door

Maya stared at the screen. Frank was standing in the hallway, yet his name flashed across the phone in her hand.

She answered without speaking.

A distorted voice whispered, “Do not open the door.”

The call ended.

Frank knocked again. “Maya, please. We don’t have much time.”

The elderly man beside him lifted both hands where she could see them through the peephole.

“Ask him about the red booth,” he said.

Maya’s stomach tightened. The red booth was where she had found the phone.

She opened the door but kept the chain fastened.

Frank’s eyes moved to the device in her hand. “That phone belonged to your father.”

“My father died before I was born.”

“That’s what your mother was told.”

The elderly man stepped closer. “My name is Walter Bennett. I was your father’s attorney.”

He explained that Maya’s father, Daniel Carter, had owned the diner and several nearby properties. Twenty-six years earlier, Daniel planned to leave everything to Maya’s mother. Before he could sign the papers, he vanished. Frank’s older brother, Thomas, bought the diner soon after and paid Maya’s mother to leave town.

Maya looked at Frank. “And you knew?”

“I found the records last week.”

Walter pointed to the phone. “Daniel recorded names, payments, and dates. Whoever left it wanted you to find the evidence.”

A crash came from the stairwell below.

Frank leaned toward the door. “We need to go. Now.”

Maya removed the chain, but before anyone moved, the phone lit up with a live video.

The diner’s security camera showed Thomas entering after closing. He walked to the red booth, lifted the table, and removed a small metal box taped beneath it.

Then he looked straight into the camera.

“I know you have the phone, Maya.”

Walter went pale.

Thomas opened the box and held up a sealed birth certificate.

“The girl you call Maya Carter,” he said, “was never Daniel’s daughter.”

Maya’s breath stopped.

Frank stared at Walter. “You said the DNA report was destroyed.”

Walter slowly backed away.

On the video, Thomas smiled.

“Ask the old man why his name is listed as her father.”
