Part 28: The Founder Who Never Knew

The portrait swung gently beneath the courtroom lights.

Frank stared at his own face painted decades younger, dressed in the dark coat worn only by the founders of Project Echo.

He stepped backward.

"I've never seen this."

Walter laughed bitterly.

"Because Michael never wanted you to."

Grace removed the portrait from its frame.

Hidden behind the canvas rested a sealed letter addressed to Frank.

The handwriting belonged to Michael Cross.

Frank broke the seal with trembling fingers.

"If you are reading this, then I have failed to return. You will believe you were only Daniel's loyal employee. That lie was necessary."

He looked up, speechless.

Daniel slowly lowered his head.

"You knew?"

"I knew he trusted you," Grace answered. "Nothing more."

Frank continued reading.

Twenty-six years earlier, Michael had quietly amended the founding charter. The sixth signature was left blank until someone proved, through years of ordinary choices, that loyalty mattered more than blood.

"There was never a sixth founder," Helen whispered.

"There was only a future one."

Frank's hands shook.

"I never accepted."

Michael's letter seemed to answer him.

"Acceptance is not spoken. It is lived."

The courtroom fell silent.

Every risk Frank had taken—the hidden phone, the false trail, the years spent protecting Daniel's diner without knowing why—had been recorded by Echo itself.

The central console chimed.

Founder Six Verified.

Walter's smile disappeared.

"No..."

Grace looked at the screen.

"The charter is complete."

The final option changed.

UNANIMOUS RESTORATION AVAILABLE.

Michael's recorded voice suddenly filled the room.

"If the sixth founder is ever confirmed, Echo no longer belongs to the past. It belongs to truth."

The archive doors unlocked one after another.

Thousands of sealed identity files rose mechanically from hidden shelves, waiting for authorization.

Frank reached toward the console.

Before his fingers touched it, another notification interrupted everything.

Conflict Detected.

Founder Six Already Registered.

Everyone froze.

The portrait on the wall slowly rotated by itself.

Behind Frank's painting hung another portrait.

The same coat.

The same founder's crest.

But a different face.

The missing bailiff.

Beneath it, a brass plaque read:

MICHAEL CROSS

Frank whispered, "Then... who have I been replacing all these years?"

The projector flickered to life.

Michael appeared once more.

He smiled gently at Frank.

May you like

"I think it's finally time you learned your real name."
