Part 8: Tomorrow's Recording

Nobody moved.
The attachment's timestamp read tomorrow, yet the video file already existed. Frank opened it with trembling hands.
The screen showed the diner exactly as it looked now. Maya stood beside the counter. Nina held the brass key. Walter smiled.
Then, in the recording, the lights exploded into darkness.
When the picture returned, Daniel was lying on the floor.
The clip stopped.
"It hasn't happened yet," Maya whispered.
Daniel stared at the timestamp. "Someone is predicting the future."
Nina shook her head. "No. Someone is creating it."
She opened the second safe using Walter's key. Inside lay an old ledger, a portable hard drive, and a sealed envelope addressed to "Project Echo."
Walter's confidence vanished.
"You were never supposed to find that."
Frank connected the drive to the diner's office computer. Hundreds of surveillance files appeared, each labeled with dates years in advance. Some matched events Maya remembered exactly—her eviction notice, the lost phone, even Elaine's fake funeral.
Daniel slowly opened the ledger. Every page listed payments made to actors, investigators, judges, and reporters.
At the final page was one name repeated more than any other.
EVELYN HAYES.
Maya looked toward the woman she had called Mother.
Evelyn whispered, "Those payments weren't mine."
A voice echoed through the diner's speakers.
"Correct."
Everyone turned toward the ceiling cameras.
"The payments were authorized by your daughter."
Maya's heart stopped.
Static filled the room before a young woman's face appeared on every monitor.
She looked exactly like Maya.
"My name isn't Nina," she said calmly.
"My name is Mara."
She smiled.
"And I've been using Maya's identity since the hospital."
The room fell silent.

Maya slowly looked at her own hands, no longer certain who she really was.
