Part 25: The Fourth Name

Nobody dared to breathe.

The monitor processed the fingerprint for several endless seconds before the hidden database unlocked one final record.

Primary Identity: Claire Michael Cross.

Silence crushed the courtroom.

Maya stared at the screen.

"Claire?"

Grace slowly nodded through tears.

"That was the name I whispered when you were born."

Daniel looked at her in confusion.

"Then why has nobody ever said it?"

"Because Michael insisted the name could never appear on paper."

Helen stepped toward the console.

"My brother believed Echo would search every official registry. If the child's real name existed anywhere, she would never be safe."

Frank frowned.

"So Maya... Mara... Elizabeth..."

"Were only shelters," Grace answered.

"The child was always Claire."

The red warning light above the console suddenly stopped flashing.

The screen changed.

Primary Identity Confirmed.

Below it appeared a final instruction.

Director authority may now be accepted... or permanently refused.

Walter's voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"Choose carefully."

"If you refuse, every protected identity in Echo disappears forever."

"If you accept, every crime committed under Echo becomes your legal responsibility."

Daniel slammed his fist onto the bench.

"She shouldn't have to carry our mistakes."

Walter laughed.

"Someone always does."

Grace gently placed her hand over Maya's.

"You don't have to save the system."

Helen quietly added,

"But you can save the people trapped inside it."

Maya looked around the archive.

Thousands of files.

Thousands of stolen lives.

None of them had chosen what Echo had made them become.

She slowly turned the brass key.

The console unlocked.

But instead of the two buttons, a third option rose from beneath the panel.

TRANSFER AUTHORITY

Frank frowned.

"I've never seen that protocol."

Neither had Walter.

For the first time, fear crossed his face.

Grace whispered,

"Michael added something after the founders signed."

Maya opened the hidden document attached to the new option.

Only one sentence appeared.

The Director shall always be the person who willingly accepts every forgotten name as their own.

Then another fingerprint request appeared.

This time...

it wasn't asking for Maya.

It was waiting for someone else.

Everyone slowly turned toward Grace.

She stepped back in horror.

"I never wanted Echo."

The scanner lit green by itself.

Then a calm computerized voice echoed through the courtroom.

May you like

Original Director located.

Welcome back... Grace Cross.
