Part 13: The Building Above

Walter's footprints vanished beyond the open steel door.

Maya followed them into a narrow service tunnel that climbed upward instead of deeper underground. After several flights of rusted stairs, she pushed open a heavy hatch.

She froze.

They were no longer beneath the diner.

They stood inside the abandoned upper floor of the old county courthouse.

"The real Echo is still above you," Frank whispered, finally understanding the message on the wall.

Daniel looked around the dusty archive room.

"This corridor connected the courthouse to the diner decades ago. Evidence could disappear without ever leaving the building."

Rows of filing cabinets filled the room. None carried names.

Only dates.

Nina opened one drawer.

Thousands of family photographs had been carefully altered by hand. Faces were replaced, children erased, signatures rewritten. Entire generations had been edited until no one could prove who truly belonged to whom.

Maya felt sick.

"So Echo never stole people."

Helen's voice came through an old courtroom speaker.

"It stole memory."

Suddenly every cabinet unlocked at once.

Folders crashed onto the floor.

One thin file landed at Maya's feet.

Across the cover was written:

SUBJECT ZERO

Inside was only one photograph.

A little girl, about five years old, stood smiling beside Judge Helen Cross and another woman who looked exactly like her.

The child's face had been scratched away.

On the back someone had written:

The first identity was never replaced. She replaced herself.

Daniel frowned.

"What does that even mean?"

Walter stepped from the shadows holding a revolver-sized remote control instead of a weapon.

"You've all been searching for the wrong person."

He pressed a button.

A hidden wall slid open, revealing a courtroom preserved exactly as it had been twenty-six years earlier.

Every chair was covered in dust.

Except one.

Someone had been sitting there recently.

On the judge's bench rested a leather-bound journal.

Maya opened it.

The first page was written in a child's handwriting.

My name is Maya. They told me to become someone else. I said yes.

She turned the next page.

The handwriting had matured over the years.

Every entry described secret training, false memories, and carefully staged encounters.

The final page was dated yesterday.

It ended with one sentence.

Tomorrow I will finally meet the girl who has been living my life.

Maya slowly looked toward Nina.

Nina was already staring back.

Neither of them spoke.

Then a hidden projector switched on by itself.

The woman who appeared on the screen was neither Helen... nor Evelyn.

She smiled gently.

"Hello, Maya."

May you like

After a long silence, she added,

"No matter which one of you answers."
