Part 34: The Promise Anna Kept

No one moved as Anna finished writing her name.

The restored registry emitted a soft chime.

Identity Archive Complete.

For the first time in decades, every record inside Project Echo matched.

Maya stared at Anna.

"You knew me."

Anna smiled gently.

"I knew the little girl who gave away her bracelet."

Grace stepped forward with tears in her eyes.

"Why didn't you come back?"

"Because someone had to remain outside Echo."

Anna explained that after the girls exchanged identities, Sarah secretly led her away before Walter's network could find her. She grew up under another family, but every year she returned to the courthouse to quietly repair damaged records before anyone noticed.

"I couldn't save everyone," Anna admitted. "But I could stop the lies from becoming permanent."

Frank opened the visitor log again.

"Every signature..."

"...was another identity restored," Anna finished.

Walter leaned against the witness stand, exhausted.

"So all these years, I wasn't controlling Echo."

"You were trapped inside it," Margaret replied.

Walter laughed bitterly.

"I spent half my life protecting a prison I thought I owned."

Daniel walked toward Anna.

"Michael trusted you."

Anna reached into her coat and removed a worn leather wallet.

Inside was an old photograph of Michael holding two little girls beneath the white lily garden behind Saint Agnes.

On the back he had written:

One will remember the truth. The other will protect it.

Maya looked at Anna.

"You protected it."

Anna nodded.

"And today you remembered it."

The central console suddenly displayed one final notification.

Remaining Unresolved Files: 1

Everyone turned toward the screen.

Grace frowned.

"There can't be one left."

The archive searched for several seconds before opening a final sealed record.

No photograph.

No fingerprint.

No birth certificate.

Only one line appeared.

Identity: THE STORYTELLER

Status:

Never Located.

Helen looked at Margaret.

"Who is that?"

Margaret slowly closed the music box.

"The only witness who recorded every version of the truth."

Anna's smile faded.

"And the only person who knows why Michael really disappeared."

Before anyone could ask another question, a fresh sheet of paper slid from the console.

Across the top, in Michael's unmistakable handwriting, were six quiet words.

This is where the real story begins.
