Part 9: The Girl in the Mirror

Every eye in the diner fixed on the screens.

The young woman smiled with Maya's face, yet there was something colder in her eyes.

Daniel stepped forward. "That's impossible."

"No," the woman replied. "Impossible was convincing all of you that only one little girl survived."

Walter lowered his head.

"So you finally remember," she said.

Maya's pulse thundered. "Who are you?"

"I told you. Mara."

She explained that after the hospital fire, Walter secretly separated the twins. One child was raised under Daniel's protection. The other disappeared into a private program called Project Echo, where children without legal identities were given new names and trained to replace witnesses, heirs, and missing people.

"I wasn't stolen," Mara said quietly. "I was manufactured."

Frank clenched his fists. "Echo never existed."

The woman laughed.

"You've worked for Echo since you were nineteen."

Frank's face drained of color.

Nina stared at him. "Tell me she's lying."

Frank couldn't.

"I transported files," he whispered. "I never knew they were children."

Daniel slammed the ledger shut.

"Who runs Echo?"

The monitors went black.

A single address appeared.

The old courthouse.

Beneath it flashed one sentence.

HEARING TODAY — 11:00 P.M.

Walter suddenly smiled again.

"You still don't understand."

He pointed toward the framed family photograph Maya had found beneath the red booth.

"Look at the reflection."

Maya lifted the picture toward the light.

Hidden in the glass stood another person behind Daniel and Elaine—a woman wearing a judge's robe. Her face had been almost invisible until now.

Daniel's hands began to shake.

"I know her."

"Of course you do," Walter replied. "She approved every false birth certificate."

Nina turned the photograph over.

A handwritten note covered the back.

If this picture is found, Judge Helen Cross has already betrayed you. Trust the bailiff instead.

The diner door burst open.

An elderly court bailiff entered, soaked by the storm, carrying a sealed evidence box.

He placed it on the counter without a word.

The official court seal was still intact.

Maya broke it open.

Inside was a newborn hospital bracelet.

The baby's name was neither Maya... nor Mara.

ELIZABETH CROSS.
