Part 24: The Director Who Never Accepted

The notification remained on Maya's screen.

Welcome, Director of Project Echo.

No one spoke.

Frank reached for the phone, but Maya stepped back.

"I never accepted anything."

Helen examined the message.

"There isn't even an approval request."

Grace looked at the government seal.

"It's authentic."

Walter's voice returned through the courtroom speakers.

"Because the appointment wasn't made today."

"It was filed twenty-six years ago."

Daniel stared at him in disbelief.

"You appointed a newborn?"

Walter laughed.

"I appointed an identity."

The hidden monitors switched on once more.

A legal contract appeared.

SUCCESSION PROTOCOL

Director Designate:

Identity Holder: MAYA CARTER

Activation Requirement:

Recognition by all surviving founders.

Grace's face turned pale.

"We've done exactly that."

One by one, everyone realized the trap.

Daniel had acknowledged Maya.

Helen had confirmed her records.

Sarah had placed the successor file before her.

Even Walter had repeatedly declared she was the only surviving candidate.

Without intending to, they had fulfilled every legal condition.

Frank whispered, "We activated the protocol ourselves."

A soft chime echoed through the courtroom.

Another message appeared.

Biometric authority transferred.

Hidden doors throughout the archive unlocked simultaneously.

Rows of sealed cabinets slowly opened.

Inside were thousands of untouched identity files.

Some belonged to children.

Some to witnesses.

Some to people officially declared dead decades earlier.

Maya looked around in horror.

"They're all still waiting."

Grace nodded.

"Waiting for someone to restore them."

Walter smiled from the screen.

"Or erase them forever."

He expected Maya to hesitate.

Instead, she walked toward the old control console beneath the judge's bench.

A single keyhole waited beside two metal buttons.

RESTORE

DESTROY

The brass key from the red booth fit perfectly.

Before Maya could turn it, the console requested one final confirmation.

Director authentication required.

A glass panel slid open.

Maya placed her hand against the scanner.

The screen flashed green.

Then suddenly turned red.

Identity Conflict.

Three names appeared again.

Maya Carter.

Mara Bennett.

Elizabeth Cross.

Followed by one line none of them had ever seen.

Primary Identity Located.

The monitor slowly revealed a fourth name.

May you like

Grace collapsed into Daniel's arms before Maya could read it.

She already knew whose name was about to appear.
