Part 18: The Blank Birth Certificate

The courtroom remained silent.

Maya lifted the final birth certificate with trembling hands. Every official seal was intact. Every signature had been verified.

Only one space remained empty.

The child's name.

"It was never completed," Helen whispered.

Sarah nodded.

"Because that child was never supposed to belong to a family."

Walter slowly laughed again.

"She belonged to Echo."

Daniel shook his head.

"No child belongs to an organization."

Walter looked directly at Maya.

"She wasn't recruited."

"She was born for it."

Grace immediately stepped forward.

"That's a lie."

Walter pulled a faded medical file from his coat.

"I've kept the original longer than anyone."

Inside was a prenatal report signed months before Maya's birth.

At the bottom appeared a classified research project.

ECHO SUCCESSION PROTOCOL

Maya stared at the document.

"My mother..."

"Evelyn volunteered," Walter interrupted.

Evelyn's face filled with horror.

"I never saw that report."

"You signed it."

"I signed hospital consent forms."

Walter smiled.

"And we changed the title afterward."

Frank snatched the file from his hands.

The ink around the signature had clearly been altered.

"It's another forgery."

Walter shrugged.

"It worked."

Sarah carefully unfolded the blank birth certificate.

Hidden between its layers lay an impossibly thin sheet of transparent paper.

Only when she held it beneath the courtroom light did invisible writing appear.

Original Identity Reserved Until Final Witness Appears.

Daniel frowned.

"There was still one witness alive?"

Grace slowly turned toward the empty jury box.

"I thought he would never come."

A walking cane struck the wooden floor.

Everyone turned.

An elderly priest entered through the side door, carrying a small locked metal case.

"I baptized the child," he said quietly.

"I refused to write the name because her parents asked me to wait until they were safe."

He placed the case before Maya.

"The key has always belonged to the child."

Maya reached into her pocket instinctively.

The tiny brass key she had found beneath the red booth fit the lock perfectly.

Inside rested a single folded page.

She unfolded it.

Instead of a birth certificate, it contained a handwritten letter.

The first line made Daniel collapse into his chair.

If you are reading this, then neither Daniel nor Walter is your biological father.
