Part 17: The Chosen Successor

No one reached for the folder.

Sarah Cross rested one hand on it as if she had carried its weight for decades.

"Maya," she said quietly, "Project Echo was never meant to survive Walter."

Maya frowned. "Then why is my name on that file?"

"Because you were never chosen to continue Echo."

Sarah slowly pushed the folder across the bench.

"You were chosen to end it."

Walter burst into laughter.

"You still believe that document is real?"

Sarah ignored him.

Inside the folder lay dozens of handwritten letters, each signed by children who had once lived under false identities. Every letter ended with the same sentence.

Please let us become ourselves again.

Daniel wiped his eyes.

"There were hundreds..."

"There were thousands," Sarah corrected.

Frank turned another page and uncovered a sealed court order bearing Helen's original signature.

Its title read:

FINAL DISSOLUTION OF PROJECT ECHO

Execution required one condition.

Verified consent from every surviving founder.

Grace.

Helen.

Sarah.

Walter.

Daniel.

Silence filled the courtroom.

"That's impossible," Frank whispered. "Walter would never agree."

Sarah looked directly at Walter.

"He already did."

Walter's smile disappeared.

She placed a faded contract beside the court order.

Twenty-six years earlier, Walter had secretly signed a clause stating that if Echo was ever used for profit instead of protection, every founder could vote to erase it permanently.

"You hid that from me," Walter said through clenched teeth.

"No," Sarah replied. "You stopped reading after the first page."

Maya reached for the final sheet.

Only one signature line remained empty.

Applicant:

Maya Carter... or her lawful identity.

Before she could touch the pen, every monitor flashed red.

IDENTITY CONFLICT DETECTED

A biometric scan began automatically.

First result:

MAYA CARTER — VERIFIED

Second result:

MARA BENNETT — VERIFIED

Third result:

ELIZABETH CROSS — VERIFIED

Everyone stared at the screen.

Three legal identities.

One fingerprint.

Sarah slowly closed her eyes.

"It finally happened."

Daniel stepped backward.

"What happened?"

Sarah looked at Maya with quiet sorrow.

"The system no longer knows which life belongs to you."

The courtroom lights suddenly locked onto the witness stand.

A hidden compartment opened beneath it.

Inside rested one final birth certificate.

May you like

Unlike every document before it...

It contained no name at all.
