Part 21: The Ring Beneath the Ashes

The projector froze on the image of the silver ring.

No face.

No name.

Only the unmistakable crest engraved into the metal.

The elderly priest slowly stood, his hands shaking.

"I buried that ring with a man everyone believed was dead."

Walter's confidence vanished.

"That's impossible."

"No," the priest replied. "Impossible is seeing it here."

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

"I've seen that crest before."

Grace nodded without taking her eyes off the image.

"It belonged to the Order of Saint Michael."

Helen inhaled sharply.

"The judges."

Grace shook her head.

"The founders."

She explained that long before Project Echo existed, a secret circle of judges, attorneys, clergy, and investigators had protected witnesses whose lives were in danger. They wore identical rings, known only to the original members. Walter later infiltrated the group and twisted its network into Project Echo.

"So the man in the delivery room..." Maya whispered.

"...was one of the founders," Grace finished.

Frank paused the recording and enlarged the reflection in a nearby hospital window.

A second figure stood behind the man.

Only a shoulder was visible.

And another identical ring.

"There were two of them," Frank said.

The priest slowly reached beneath his collar and pulled out a thin chain.

Hanging from it was the very same silver ring.

"I never buried mine," he admitted. "I buried my brother's."

Silence swept through the courtroom.

"You have a brother?" Daniel asked.

"I had one."

The priest closed his eyes.

"We were twins."

Walter looked genuinely unsettled for the first time.

"The second founder..."

"...was never found," Grace whispered.

The priest nodded.

"He wasn't missing."

"He volunteered to disappear."

At that moment, the projector resumed by itself.

The hidden man finally spoke.

"If my daughter ever watches this..."

His voice echoed through the courtroom.

"...tell her I chose to vanish because the Order had already been betrayed from within."

Maya's heartbeat quickened.

The camera tilted upward.

For less than a second, the man's face became visible in the reflection of a surgical lamp.

Everyone recognized him.

Not Daniel.

Not Walter.

Not the priest.

It was the elderly bailiff who had delivered the evidence box.

The courtroom doors burst open.

The bailiff was gone.

In his place lay only his wooden cane.

May you like

Tied to it was a note.

Don't follow me... unless you're ready to learn why Grace lied about the delivery room.
