Part 19: The Letter Without a Father

Daniel stared at the letter in Maya's hands, unable to speak.

She continued reading.

Neither Daniel nor Walter is your biological father. They both believed different lies because I wanted them looking at each other instead of the truth.

There was no signature.

Only a small pressed white lily beneath the final sentence.

The elderly priest lowered his head.

"I remember that flower."

Grace's expression changed instantly.

"So do I."

She searched through the old evidence box until she found a faded church registry. Every baptism recorded that year carried the priest's seal—except one page, where a white lily had been pressed between the paper before the ink dried.

The name of the mother had been removed.

The father's space had never been filled.

Frank frowned.

"Someone erased only half the record."

"No," the priest corrected quietly. "It was never written."

Helen examined the paper under a courtroom lamp.

A faint watermark slowly appeared.

Saint Agnes Home.

Evelyn gasped.

"I haven't heard that name in twenty-six years."

She explained that Saint Agnes had been a private maternity home outside the city where women under witness protection secretly gave birth. The building had burned down only weeks after Maya's birth, and every official record was declared destroyed.

Walter slowly backed toward the exit.

Grace noticed first.

"He's leaving."

Before anyone could stop him, Walter pressed a hidden switch beneath the witness stand.

Metal shutters slammed over every courtroom door.

Emergency lights flooded the room.

Then a calm computerized voice echoed through the speakers.

Archive Lockdown Initiated.

Original Witness Released.

A hidden elevator opened behind the judge's bench.

An elderly woman stepped out, supported by a cane.

Daniel froze.

"Mother..."

The woman looked far older than anyone remembered, but her eyes were unmistakable.

She turned to Maya.

"I've waited twenty-six years to meet my granddaughter."

Maya's breath caught.

"If you're Daniel's mother..."

The woman gently shook her head.

"I'm not here because of Daniel."

She pointed toward the unsigned letter.

"I wrote it."

Silence swept across the courtroom.

Then she spoke the words no one had imagined.

"Your biological father never knew you existed..."

"...because she was the one who carried you."

Every face turned toward Grace.

Grace slowly closed her eyes.

May you like

She did not deny it.
