Part 29: The Name Michael Protected

The courtroom remained frozen.
Michael's recorded image filled the screen, his calm eyes fixed on Frank.
"I think it's finally time you learned your real name."
Frank could barely speak.
"My name... isn't Frank Lawson?"
Michael smiled sadly.
"It became Frank Lawson."
The projector switched to an old adoption file.
A toddler stood beside Daniel outside the diner, smiling with a wooden toy truck in his hands.
Across the bottom, someone had written:
Child temporarily registered as Frank Lawson.
Daniel's hands began to shake.
"I remember that day."
"You should," Michael replied. "You promised never to ask where he came from."
Grace stared at Daniel.
"You knew he wasn't your son."
"I knew he needed a family."
Helen quickly searched the archive.
Another sealed folder appeared.
ORIGINAL REGISTRATION – RESTRICTED
Frank opened it with trembling fingers.
The page inside contained no photograph.
Only one fingerprint.
And one birth name.
Matthew Cross.
The room fell silent.
Helen covered her mouth.
"My nephew..."
Michael nodded from the recording.
"You were my son."
Frank slowly lowered the file.
"So... Maya isn't the only child Echo hid."
"No," Michael answered.
"You were the first."
Walter slammed his fist against the barrier.
"Impossible! I searched every record!"
"You searched for Michael's son," Grace said quietly.
"You never searched for Daniel's helper."
Frank's entire life suddenly made sense.
The diner.
The hidden phone.
Michael's trust.
Even Daniel's quiet protection.
None of it had been accidental.
The console chimed again.
Guardian Two verified.
Founder Six verified.
Original heir verified.
Walter stared at the screen in horror.
"There shouldn't be an heir."
Michael's image looked directly at Maya.
"I never built Echo to survive."
He turned toward Frank.
"I built it so one day... my two children could destroy it together."
Frank looked at Maya.
Neither of them had spoken the truth aloud before this moment.
They were not strangers connected by coincidence.
They had been raised apart...
to complete the same promise.
Before either could touch the console, every monitor suddenly turned black.
One final message appeared in white letters.
Emergency Override Activated.
Controller Access: Unknown.
Then a woman's voice echoed through the archive.
It was neither Grace...
nor Helen...
nor Sarah.
"Michael believed he was the last architect."

A slow laugh followed.
"He forgot about me."
