Part 27: The Child Who Could Decide

The photograph trembled in Maya's hands.
She was no more than three years old, standing between Grace and Michael, both smiling as though the world had not yet fallen apart.
"The second Guardian..." Daniel whispered.
"...was never meant to be an adult," Helen finished.
Grace slowly nodded.
"Michael believed no founder could ever be trusted forever."
Walter stared at the picture in disbelief.
"He made a child my equal?"
"He made an innocent person your opposite," Grace replied.
"The only person who had nothing to gain."
The second fingerprint scanner glowed softly.
Guardian Two Verification Required.
Maya stepped forward.
"No," Sarah said gently.
"It isn't asking for Maya."
The room fell silent.
Grace looked at the photograph again.
Michael's hand rested not on Maya's shoulder...
but on the tiny silver bracelet around her wrist.
The same bracelet now lay inside the evidence box.
Frank hurried to retrieve it.
As soon as he placed it beside the scanner, a hidden laser traced the engraved pattern.
Artifact recognized.
A compartment opened beneath the console.
Inside rested a tiny ceramic ink pad preserved beneath glass.
The priest smiled faintly.
"I remember this."
"Michael insisted the child leave one fingerprint before leaving the hospital."
Daniel's eyes widened.
"So Echo never needed an adult print."
"It stored hers from birth," Helen realized.
Maya gently pressed her thumb against the faded ceramic surface.
The scanner compared the two prints.
Three tense seconds passed.
Then every light in the archive changed from red to white.
Guardian Two Confirmed.
Walter lunged toward the console, but steel barriers shot up between him and the controls.
"No!" he shouted.
"You don't understand what you're unlocking!"
The monitors awakened one by one.
Instead of identity files, thousands of video messages appeared.
Children.
Parents.
Witnesses.
Families who had vanished decades earlier.
Each recording began with the same words.
If you're seeing this, Echo has finally found its true Guardian.
Grace covered her mouth.
Michael had never planned for Echo to belong to one person.
He had turned it into a vault of promises waiting for the only child untouched by greed.
The console unlocked completely.
Three final choices appeared.
RESTORE EVERY IDENTITY.
SEAL ECHO FOREVER.
REVEAL THE FINAL FOUNDER.
Maya looked toward Grace.
"What would Michael have chosen?"
Grace slowly shook her head.
"He never wanted us to decide."
Before anyone could touch the screen, the third option activated by itself.
The archive lights dimmed.
A hidden portrait descended from the ceiling.
Beneath the dust was the face of the final founder.

Everyone recognized him instantly.
It was Frank.
