Part 4: The Second Phone

Maya stared at the device in Frank’s hand. Same model. Same cracked corner. Same photograph on the lock screen.

“You made the call,” she said.

Frank nodded. “And I canceled the email.”

Walter stepped between them. “Why?”

“Because the files were incomplete,” Frank replied. “If sent, Thomas would have been arrested, Daniel would have stayed hidden, and the person above him would have escaped.”

The elevator stood open.

Maya gripped the first phone. “Who is above Thomas?”

Frank looked toward the darkness. “Your mother.”

“My mother is dead.”

“That is what she needed everyone to believe.”

He played a video recorded two nights earlier. Elaine Carter, silver streaking her hair, sat inside the diner after closing and handed Frank a phone.

“If Maya finds it, she is ready,” Elaine said. “If Walter reaches her first, get her away.”

Walter went pale. “That video is fake.”

Maya noticed the coffee-cup clock behind Elaine. Its hands were frozen at 2:17—the exact time on her mother’s death certificate.

Frank said Elaine had discovered Daniel and Walter moving money through the properties under her name. She vanished to protect Maya and spent years collecting proof.

“Thomas was never the mastermind,” Frank said. “He was the accountant they trapped.”

Walter reached for Maya’s phone. She stepped back, and it slipped onto the carpet. The recorder opened.

A new file began playing.

Walter’s voice filled the hallway.

“Once Elaine signs, Daniel gets the diner, I get the properties, and the child disappears from every record.”

Maya looked up. Walter no longer looked frightened.

He pressed the elevator button. The doors started closing, but Frank blocked them.

Inside stood Elaine.

Alive.

She looked at Maya, then Walter.

“You were supposed to protect her,” Elaine said.

Walter smiled.

“No. I was supposed to learn which one of you still had the real phone.”

Maya looked down.

Both devices were gone.

Then her own phone rang inside the apartment.

The screen showed a live feed from the diner pantry.

Daniel was no longer in the chair.
