Part 14: The Woman With No Name

The courtroom remained perfectly still.

The woman on the screen smiled as though she had been expecting this meeting for years.

"No matter which one of you answers," she repeated, "only one of you remembers the truth."

Maya and Nina exchanged uncertain glances.

Daniel stepped toward the projector. "Who are you?"

"My name has been erased too many times to matter."

She touched an old photograph lying beside her. It showed Helen, Hannah, Elaine, Evelyn... and a fifth young woman whose face had been carefully cut away.

Walter quietly lowered his head.

"You," Daniel whispered.

Walter closed his eyes.

"Her name was Grace."

The woman nodded.

"I founded Project Echo."

Silence swept through the courtroom.

"You?" Frank asked.

"I built it to protect children whose lives had already been stolen."

Her expression darkened.

"Walter turned it into a business."

She explained that Echo had once hidden endangered children by giving them temporary identities until corrupt officials could be exposed. But after Helen's investigation collapsed, Walter secretly sold those identities to wealthy clients desperate to erase scandals, replace heirs, and rewrite family histories.

"So every lie began with something meant to save people," Maya murmured.

"And every rescue became another prison," Grace replied.

She activated another monitor.

A biometric scan appeared.

Two names flashed across the screen.

MAYA CARTER

NINA CROSS

Both records displayed the same result.

Identity Status: VERIFIED

Frank frowned.

"That's impossible."

Grace smiled sadly.

"It isn't."

"There were never two replacements."

"There were two originals."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"You knew?"

She nodded through tears.

"Elaine gave birth to one child."

"Helen gave birth to one child."

"When the hospital burned, Walter switched their records—not the babies."

Maya's heart pounded.

"So Nina and I were never sisters."

"No."

Grace looked directly into the camera.

"You grew up believing the wrong families because your identities were exchanged before either of you had names."

Walter suddenly laughed.

"You've still missed the last piece."

He reached into the judge's bench and removed a faded adoption decree signed twenty-six years earlier.

Only one signature remained hidden beneath a strip of tape.

Maya peeled it back.

Her breath caught.

The signature belonged to Daniel.

Below it, one sentence had been added in different handwriting.

The exchange was requested by the father himself.

Daniel staggered backward.

"I never signed that."

Grace slowly shook her head.

"No..."

She looked straight at him.

"You signed something far worse."

The projector switched to a final video.

A much younger Daniel appeared, calmly placing two newborn bracelets on a table.

Then he deliberately exchanged them.
