Part 23: The One Who Chose Her

The words on the register refused to leave Maya's mind.
Ask who chose her instead.
She looked at Grace.
"If Michael Cross was my father... why did everyone spend twenty-six years arguing about Daniel and Walter?"
Grace wiped away her tears.
"Because Michael wanted it that way."
The bailiff unlocked a second compartment beneath the archive shelf. Inside rested a weathered leather journal stamped with the crest of the Order of Saint Michael.
"It belonged to my brother," he said quietly.
Maya opened the first page.
Michael had written only one sentence.
A child protected by many names is harder to erase than a child protected by one family.
Daniel slowly sat down.
"So every false record..."
"...was another shield," Grace finished.
Helen turned the pages until she reached Michael's final entry.
He had listed six trusted guardians.
Daniel.
Grace.
Helen.
Sarah.
The priest.
And one final name.
Frank Lawson.
Frank stared in disbelief.
"I never met him."
The bailiff nodded.
"You did."
He removed a faded photograph from the journal.
A teenage Frank stood beside Michael outside the diner, smiling while replacing a broken sign.
"The day he gave you your first job," the bailiff said. "He was already preparing you."
Frank's hands trembled.
"He knew I would protect Maya?"
"He hoped you would."
Suddenly the archive lights flickered.
Walter's voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"You've finally reached the right room."
Steel doors slammed shut around them.
A projector descended from the ceiling.
Walter appeared live from an unknown location.
"You've spent weeks chasing birth certificates."
He smiled calmly.
"But identity was never the prize."
He pressed a button.
The wall behind Maya slowly opened, revealing dozens of framed photographs.
Every picture showed the same little girl.
Each had a different name.
Maya Carter.
Mara Bennett.
Elizabeth Cross.
Anna Hayes.
Claire Lawson.
Emily Stone.
The same face.
Different lives.
Grace whispered, "He tested every identity."
Walter nodded.
"Only one survived."
He enlarged the final photograph.
Maya froze.
It had been taken only three days earlier.
She stood outside her apartment, completely unaware of the camera.
Beneath the image appeared one chilling sentence.
SUBJECT OBSERVATION COMPLETE.
Then Walter looked directly into the lens.
"I don't need to know who you were anymore."
"I finally know who you'll become."
The transmission ended.
At that exact moment, Maya's phone vibrated.
A government notification appeared across the screen.
