Part 39: Eleanor's Journal

The courthouse square was empty by the time Maya turned around.
Eleanor Brooks was gone.
Only a faint set of footprints remained on the rain-dark pavement, leading toward the old train station before disappearing entirely.
Frank looked at the second journal Maya had recovered from the briefcase.
Its cover matched Michael's almost perfectly.
The only difference was a single silver emblem shaped like a compass instead of the white lily.
Grace carefully opened the first page.
Unlike Michael's journal, this one contained only one handwritten sentence.
Echo ended. The Compass begins.
Daniel frowned.
"What is the Compass?"
Margaret's expression changed.
"I prayed Michael destroyed those records."
"So you knew."
"I knew they existed," she answered quietly. "Never what they became."
Anna turned another page.
Instead of names, it contained a map of Europe marked with dozens of tiny circles connected by thin blue lines.
Paris.
Madrid.
London.
Prague.
Rome.
None of the locations had anything to do with Project Echo's archives.
Frank noticed a note in Eleanor's handwriting.
"Every restored identity leaves behind one unanswered question. Follow the question, not the person."
Maya looked toward Grace.
"I thought Echo was the whole story."
Grace smiled sadly.
"So did Michael."
A folded telegram slipped from the journal.
The paper had yellowed with age.
It was addressed to Michael Cross but had never been opened.
Daniel carefully unfolded it.
COMPASS ACTIVATED. DO NOT RETURN TO SAINT AGNES. THE LIST IS NO LONGER SAFE.
There was no signature.
Only the same silver compass emblem.
Helen examined the date.
"It was sent three days before Michael disappeared."
Silence settled over the group.
"So he wasn't running from Echo," Frank whispered.
"He was protecting something else."
Just then Maya's phone vibrated.
Not a call.
Not a message.
A secure government notification.
Case Echo: Closed.
A second notification appeared immediately beneath it.
Case Compass: Access Granted.
Before Maya could tap the screen, every page inside Eleanor's journal began turning by itself.
They stopped at a blank sheet.
Slowly, as if written by an invisible pen, new words appeared.
If you have reached this page, then you already know the greatest secret.
Echo never erased identities.
It was created to hide the people searching for the Compass List.
Maya looked up.
"The list..."
Margaret slowly nodded.
"It contains the real names of everyone who built the network before Echo ever existed."

Then she whispered the words Michael had never lived long enough to say.
"And someone is still hunting every name on it."
