Part 10: The Bracelet No One Expected

The diner fell silent as Maya stared at the tiny hospital bracelet.
ELIZABETH CROSS.
Judge Helen Cross slowly lowered her eyes in the faded photograph.
Daniel whispered, "She never had a daughter."
The elderly bailiff shook his head.
"That's what everyone believed."
He removed another sealed envelope from the evidence box. The wax seal carried the crest of the county probate court.
"It was ordered to be opened only if Daniel Carter returned alive."
Maya unfolded the letter.
Twenty-six years earlier, Judge Helen Cross had secretly given birth to a daughter while investigating a conspiracy involving forged inheritances, missing children, and stolen identities. Before the child could be registered, the newborn disappeared from the hospital.
The investigation was buried.
The judge remained silent.
Walter smiled again.
"Because she knew speaking would get her killed."
Frank looked at the bracelet, then at Maya.
"You think Elizabeth became Mara."
The bailiff answered before anyone else could.
"No."
He reached into the evidence box and lifted an old fingerprint card.
"Elizabeth became Nina."
The room froze.
Nina instinctively stepped backward.
"That's impossible."
"The DNA results were hidden inside the courthouse archives," the bailiff replied. "Judge Cross was your biological mother."
Daniel frowned.
"Then who is Maya?"
No one answered.
Instead, the office computer suddenly restarted by itself.
Every monitor displayed a single encrypted folder.
ORIGINAL IDENTITIES
Password required.
Walter quietly laughed.
"You'll never open it."
Maya noticed something engraved inside Elizabeth's bracelet.
Three tiny numbers.
217
Her breath caught.
"The clock..."
Everyone looked toward Evelyn.
The coffee-shop clock in the old recording had been frozen at exactly 2:17.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"That wasn't the time Elaine died."
"It was the password," Maya whispered.
She typed 217.
The folder unlocked.
Hundreds of birth records appeared.
One file opened automatically.
SUBJECT: MAYA CARTER
Status:
Identity Created.
Original Name:
Unknown.
Before anyone could read another line, every file vanished from the screen.
A new message slowly appeared.
Remote access connected.
Then a live video filled every monitor.
A woman sat alone in a dark office, her face hidden by the shadows.
She spoke calmly.
"My name is Judge Helen Cross."
Daniel's face turned white.
The bailiff staggered backward.
"But... we buried you nineteen years ago."
May you like
The woman slowly lifted her head.
"You buried the wrong sister."
