Part 26: Grace's Final Decision

The courtroom echoed with the computerized voice.

Welcome back... Grace Cross.

Grace stood motionless.

"I resigned twenty-six years ago," she whispered.

The console answered immediately.

Resignation rejected. No lawful successor completed the transfer.

Walter's smile slowly returned.

"I told you. Echo never belonged to me."

Helen stepped toward the control panel, reading the hidden protocol line by line.

"Michael changed the charter the night before he disappeared."

Daniel frowned.

"What did he change?"

Helen looked up.

"The Director could never resign while even one stolen identity remained unresolved."

Grace closed her eyes.

"So I've been Director this entire time..."

"...without knowing it," Frank finished.

Maya looked at the thousands of unopened files.

"Then all these years..."

"I was searching for a way to destroy Echo," Grace said quietly. "I never realized I still had the authority to do it."

Walter laughed.

"You still don't."

He held up a small black keycard.

"The system requires two Directors."

Everyone turned toward him.

"The original charter named a silent safeguard."

Helen searched through Michael's journal until a folded amendment slipped onto the floor.

She unfolded it carefully.

Walter was right.

Every decision affecting Project Echo required two independent approvals.

The first belonged to Grace.

The second...

had never been identified.

A second fingerprint scanner rose beside the first.

The screen displayed:

Awaiting Guardian Two.

Daniel instinctively placed his hand on the scanner.

Rejected.

Helen tried.

Rejected.

Frank.

Sarah.

The priest.

Even Walter.

Each received the same answer.

Maya stared at the untouched scanner.

"There has to be someone left."

The old priest suddenly remembered the silver ring.

He removed it from the chain around his neck and placed it on the glass.

Nothing happened.

Then the ring rolled slightly.

A hidden compartment opened beneath the scanner.

Inside lay a yellowed envelope sealed with white wax.

Across the front, in Michael Cross's unmistakable handwriting, were seven simple words.

Only open after Walter finally tells the truth.

Walter's face lost all color.

For the first time in twenty-six years...

he whispered,

"I never created Project Echo."

The scanner chimed.

Truth condition satisfied.

The envelope slowly unlocked by itself.

Inside rested a single photograph.

Michael stood beside Grace...

holding a little girl between them.

On the back, one sentence had been written in blue ink.

May you like

The second Guardian was never a founder.

It was the child.
