Part 33: The Name That Was Always Missing

The courtroom lights slowly returned.
Only one monitor remained active.
The restored birth registry had finished rebuilding itself, line by line, as if twenty-six years of lies had never existed.
Maya stepped closer.
The unfamiliar name glowing on the screen was neither Claire, nor Maya, nor Mara.
It read:
Anna Michael Cross.
Silence swept across the room.
Helen frowned.
"There was never an Anna."
Margaret looked at the screen without surprise.
"There had to be."
Grace slowly reached for the keyboard.
"No... Michael told me Anna was only a placeholder."
The system responded instantly.
Placeholder confirmed.
Purpose: Protect the Original Child.
Frank stared at the message.
"So Anna never existed?"
A second line appeared.
Incorrect.
Anna Cross authorized this restoration twelve years ago.
Everyone froze.
Walter whispered,
"Impossible..."
"She died before Echo expanded."
The monitor displayed a surveillance photograph dated twelve years earlier.
A young woman entered the abandoned courthouse carrying a sealed archive box.
Her face remained hidden beneath a hood.
But the registry identified her without hesitation.
ANNA CROSS
Status:
Founder Access Granted.
Daniel's hands began to shake.
"Then someone has been maintaining Echo all this time."
Margaret nodded.
"Not maintaining it."
"Delaying its collapse."
Another hidden drawer slid open beneath the console.
Inside rested a visitor log.
Only one signature had been added during the last decade.
Every year.
The same date.
The same elegant handwriting.
Anna Cross.
Maya slowly turned the final page.
Instead of another signature, a handwritten note waited for her.
"If you're reading this, I kept my promise."
"You were never meant to remember me."
"Because I was the child who walked away wearing no bracelet."
Nina covered her mouth.
"The little girl..."
Grace nodded through tears.
"She survived."
Before anyone could speak again, the courthouse doors unlocked by themselves.
Soft footsteps echoed through the empty hallway.
A woman entered carrying nothing except an old white lily.
She smiled gently at Maya.
"I think..."
"...it's finally safe to give your name back."
She placed the flower beside the restored registry.
Then she quietly signed the final blank line.
May you like
Anna Cross.
