Part 16: The Third Sister

The courtroom held its breath.

The woman in the security footage entered the nursery without hesitation. She wore a nurse's uniform, but every movement felt deliberate. When she lifted her face toward the camera, Maya's pulse stopped.

She had Elaine's features.

Evelyn's eyes.

And Helen's unmistakable voice.

"No..." Helen whispered. "She can't be alive."

The recording froze as the woman looked directly into the lens, as though she had known someone would watch it decades later.

Grace spoke softly.

"Meet Sarah Cross."

"Helen's younger sister," Daniel murmured.

Helen nodded slowly. "She disappeared before the investigation began."

Walter laughed.

"She never disappeared."

He pointed at the screen.

"She built the illusion that everyone else vanished."

Grace opened another file.

Sarah had been a forensic linguist hired by the court to authenticate voices and legal recordings. When Project Echo was created, she designed the system that allowed identities to survive through fabricated audio, rewritten archives, and staged memories.

"It was never enough to change documents," Grace said. "People had to believe the lies with their own ears."

Maya suddenly remembered every mysterious phone call.

"The voices..."

"They were all hers," Grace replied.

Sarah could imitate anyone after hearing only a few minutes of speech. Every warning, every confession, every desperate call had been carefully performed to push each person toward the next clue.

Evelyn collapsed into a chair.

"So Elaine never recorded those messages."

"No."

"Neither did Daniel."

Frank replayed the earliest voicemail one final time.

Hidden beneath the static was a faint melody.

Nina immediately recognized it.

"The lullaby."

Grace nodded.

"Sarah left it there intentionally. She wanted Elizabeth to find the truth before Walter found her."

Walter's smile finally faded.

"You still think Sarah is helping you."

Grace looked directly into the camera.

"She isn't helping anyone."

The courtroom lights dimmed.

A hidden door behind the judge's bench slowly unlocked.

Footsteps echoed from the darkness.

An elderly woman with silver hair emerged, carrying a leather folder stamped PROJECT ECHO – FINAL SUCCESSOR.

She looked at Helen.

Then at Evelyn.

Finally at Maya.

"My name is Sarah Cross," she said calmly.

"I've spent twenty-six years making sure none of you discovered who truly inherited Project Echo."

She placed the folder on the bench.

Only one name appeared on the cover.

MAYA.
