Part 40: The Compass Protocol

The morning train left the station without a single passenger boarding.

Maya stood on the platform, Eleanor's journal tucked beneath her arm. The silver compass embossed on its cover felt strangely warm, as though it had been waiting for her touch.

Frank caught up a moment later.

"You really think someone is still chasing the list?"

Maya didn't answer.

She opened the journal again.

This time, the pages remained blank for several seconds before a faint map slowly emerged, not drawn in ink but appearing like moisture on old paper.

A single word formed at the center.

GENEVA.

Grace looked over Maya's shoulder.

"That's not one of Echo's cities."

"No," Margaret said quietly. "It's older."

She explained that before Project Echo existed, a handful of judges, investigators, archivists, and journalists had created an informal network called Compass. Unlike Echo, Compass never changed identities. Its only purpose was to preserve the truth when governments, corporations, or powerful families tried to erase it.

"So Echo protected people," Maya said.

Margaret nodded.

"Compass protected history."

Anna noticed a folded page hidden inside the journal's back cover.

Unlike the others, it was sealed with blue wax instead of white.

Maya broke the seal.

Inside was a train ticket dated tomorrow.

Destination:

Geneva.

Passenger:

Maya Carter.

She frowned.

"I never booked this."

"You didn't," Eleanor's voice said from behind them.

Everyone turned.

She stood beneath the station clock, wearing the same gray coat, carrying only a small canvas bag.

"I did."

Daniel stepped forward cautiously.

"You disappeared."

"I was making sure no one followed you."

Eleanor looked at Maya.

"The people searching for the Compass List don't care about Project Echo anymore."

"They care about you."

"Why me?"

"Because you're the first person in thirty years who possesses both journals."

She pointed toward the books in Maya's hands.

"Separately, they're memories."

"Together..."

"They're a key."

A freight train thundered past, drowning out the final words.

When the noise faded, Eleanor was staring at the station's old brass clock.

"It has already begun."

Across the platform, every electronic display suddenly went black.

Instead of departure times, one message appeared on every screen.

COMPASS PROTOCOL ACTIVATED

WELCOME, ARCHIVIST.

Maya slowly looked down at the journals.

Neither one bore the title Echo anymore.

Both covers had changed.

Together, they now formed a single name.
